DJ Colin Faver - Interview from 1993We met up with one of the country's discrete DJ's who had just returned from Ibiza, Colin Favor. We spoke about his past and the future, and, respect Colin's wishes to stay underground, which is where he shall stay. When did you first start to DJ? I started DJing at a club called Churchill back in Heaven and I got asked to play in a very Trendy Club on a Tuesday night and that was about 12 years ago. |

What type of music did you play back then? It was kind of indie/Reggae allsorts really, quite a mixture. So what made you want to start DJing? I have always loved music. At friends parties I would start to mess around with the records and mix the music so, it took off from there. Who were you musically influenced by back then? Nobody really I was always into experimenting with different types of music, I wasn't really into following anyone. Did you find it hard to get yourself established as a DJ? Yes, very hard I took many years and it was hard work, especially in London. I'd definitely say that it has nothing to do with how good you are at DJing, it is who you know that helps you make it in the closed circuit areas such as London. I used to go to a club every night of the week to try and get to know some of the people, so that they would give me a break. How would you view the scene at the moment? I like the music I like all the music. Obviously the Trance is one I enjoy. The only thing that pisses me off at the moment is that everything is stuck in boxes, I mean the music is so segregated, you can only play certain music in certain clubs. Knowledge is a Techno club and to go in there and play Garage wouldn't work, you should have variety. What sort of music do you play at the moment? I play a bit of Trance, I like to play old House, Acid, Ambiance, whatever take my fancy really. At the moment do you think techno hasn't got enough respect? A lot of people have mixed views on Techno, some people think its just a lot of noise and just one beat, I think that people should realise that there is more to it than that. There is also intelligent music which is different again, but there is good and bad in all types of music. The people that think Techno has just arrived are wrong, its been around for years! It is true that you only played Techno lately? I have played a couple of Garage sets over the last few months, and on the radio I play a lot slower. I don't like to play at the big raves anymore, all it is is Breakbeat and Jungle.
Do you think Techno will take over other music styles, in the near future? That's a difficult one for there is so many types of Techno. There is a commercial Techno sound that has originated from the old Hardcore Techno, like 2 Unlimited, people call that commercial Techno, I don't call it any type of techno. There are a lot Techno mixes on a lot of record mixes now, many of the Hardcore tracks mix with Techno, and if things carry on like that then I do think the Techno will take over. How different do you think playing a Breakbeat set is to playing a Techno set? Breakbeat is pretty easy really. It's a very similar sound to Techno, I do like a lot of the bouncy stuff I have to admit. The only thing that puts me off Breakbeat is the speeded up vocals, the same breakbeats all of the time.
Do you think that a DJ can express himself more in DJing as a Techno DJ? I think that it is a bit more personal in the fact that you are playing original music. Most breakbeat stuff is samples and not records anyway. You do get a better chance to express yourself. When you buy new music what do you look for in a Techno record? The groove, definitely the groove.
How big do you feel the Techno scene is to the Hardcore scene club wise? I can't really say at the moment because I'm a bit out of touch with the Hardcore scene. It's my understanding that it's got a lot more aggressive and not to happy, but I haven't been for a long while so I can't really comment.
What other DJ's do you like listening too? Colin Dale, Dave Angel, Steve Bicknell.
What are your views on MC's? I like Ribbs, he's the only one worth having, someone coming in now and then to add to the character of the music, and not go on for 20 minutes. |
