DJ Ramos ProfileOne of the big DJ names from the start of Fantazia, below we have an interview with DJ Ramos: So how did it all begin? Well when I was 11-12 years old way way back I was seriously into my hip hop & electro big time and myself and a few mates used to go to this club in Southampton called the Top Rank on a Monday night as it was an under 18’s night. Here the Dj used to play all sorts of dance music and I used to watch him every week mix and stuff and was fascinated by it. After a few months of chatting to the Dj every week he asked me if i would like to be taught by him to Dj and I jumped at the chance. I used to do a half hour house music mix every week playing the likes of Jack your Body, love cant turn around and all the original 1st Chicago house music and it then progressed from there into the rave scene! |

Where did the name come from? Well before I started Djing and when I used to go to the top rank I used to be a bit of a tear away and me and few of me mates used to have a little drink before we went in and when i used to stagger around a little bit drunk my mate said I acted and spoke like a pirate so he came up with the name Ramos the pirate. Now to all you youngun’s out there I don’t condone drinking in anyway, I was young and stooped, so don’t do it, it isn't cool!!!!!
What gave you that initial push? Well my good friend Dr S Gachet got me my first serious booking down in Cornwall and it was amazing! From that day on which was probably 1991 sort of time I aint looked back, seriously hooked on Hardcore & Rave music.
Did the Djing, Production, Promoting come 1st? Djing came first then in 1993 I stared to make music with me pals Dj supreme & the Sunset Regime. I don’t do any promoting i leave that to others to concentrate on!
Who’s throwing the best parties at the moment? Well in the Hardcore scene I would say HTID, Raverbaby, Slammin Vinyl, Hardcore Heaven, Uproar, Fusion & elektrik. I would also like to add that the square 1 lot from Banbury do some wicked little festivals as well.
Which other countries have you played/put parties on? Australia, America, Germany, Switzerland, Japan and a couple of others!
What was the first event you ever played at/put on? The first main event was Fantazia along time ago way back in the early rave days that went on to Dreamscapes and Helter Skelter, Die Hard and all the rest of the raves in the 1990’s.
What’s the best event you’ve played at/put on? I think Helter Skelter in the mid 1990’s 28,000 people in this big field, absolutely blinding!
What was your first record you bought? Gee thats a toughy, probably a early rap artist like Roxanne shante or Marley marl, Run Dmc some thing like that. 1st house tune was an import of Steve Silk Hurleys – Jack your body.
Out of all the tunes you have, which one ‘never fails?’ Without any fail any do i do know matter what style of music it is at the event, anything by the Prodigy always goes down well!
What's your favourite tune of all time? There is loads but probably Chime by Orbital, pure brilliance!!!!
When all the partying is over how do you like to chill out? I aint got time to chill I have 3 kids man!!!!!!!!!!! No seriously watch a lot of DVD’s with the missus!
So how is the scene in your eyes at the moment? Very divided but still rocking!
What's is your real name if you use an alias and how old are you? My real name is Paul and I am 37 years young!
Where do you live? Southampton
What can you remember of playing/being at a Fantazia? Pure raving excellence!!!!!!!!
How big is your vinyl collection? What do you think of CDJ's? I had a funny turn a few years back and sold a lot of me vinyl, I know what a stoopid man I am, totally regret it now. At one stage I probably had about 7,000 records. I love cd’js its the future man you have to keep up with the times.
Funniest thing that ever happened at an event? Every time I go out something funny always happens, to many things to mention. Its always good to have a sense of humour.
Other DJs you rate? Gee well Danny Tenaglia, Carl Cox, LTj Bukem, Dr S Gachet, Styles, Hixxy, SY, Hype, boy again to many to mention.
What are your feelings on the MC's? I like some but not all of them, some go on to much man!
What do you do outside of the dance music scene? I am a Approved Electrician so I work as well as work within the Rave scene!
What advice would you give to up and coming DJs/Promoters? Make your own original music, that's the only way now to make it big!
When you play is this pre planned set? Not really, I do have a few tunes that I always drop though, depends where I am playing.
Anything else you want to say? Any shouts? Yeh man keep your ears and eyes peeled for the relaunched RSR label which has its first release November this year. See you all at Fantazia New Years eve. Big shout to me partners Christine(me missus), Dj Punch (couldn’t do this without ya mate), to all me friends in the scene and to me 3 girls!
If you could stage a rave anywhere, where would you choose? On a beach in the Seychelles!!!!!!
How do you see the scene 5 years from now? Different but just as strong, dance music is 4 life not just 4 Christmas!
If you had a time machine what year would you go back to and why? 1985, take all me studio equipment back with me and make a blinding dance tracks and I would be as famous as Pete Tong now, wahay!
KnightRider or A-team? Now that is a toughie, probably A-team, I aint getting on no plane fool, Mr T a pure ledge!
