DJ Ten ProfileDJ Ten's involvement in the hardcore scene started in 1991. After chancing his arm by sending a promoter one of his mixtapes, he received the call he never thought he'd get and landed his first residency position at Club HQ, held at Edinburgh's Calton Studios. |

Various guest spots soon followed in and around Edinburgh, including the 'Rave on the Waves' which was held on a ferry which travelled from Granton to Burnt Island and back. And, yes, the mixing was tricky! This was where DJ Ten first met the late Tom Wilson, who was to have a lasting impression on the young dj.
He started to send mixtapes to Tom, at his "Steppin Out" radio show on Forth FM and luck had it that Tom was starting up a new show called "Bonus Beats" in which Scottish DJ's would have two 30 minute mixes broadcast to the area weeknights between 6.30 - 7.30pm. So, Tom got in touch and DJ Ten became the first hardcore dj to have a set on Tom's new show. Such was the demand for his sets he had numerous appearances throughout the show's lifetime.
At around the same time as he was blastin the airwaves he joined up with Clubscene Records, Scotland's premier rave & hardcore label at the time. Guest spots were now increasing rapidly & through his involvement with Clubscene he was able to gain studio time to enable him to produce his first release, "Intense". Released on CD and 12" in 1994, it shifted large numbers for a so-called unknown. The success of the record paid off in more ways than one as his bookings increased considerably. Within month's of the release he fulfilled his ambition to play at Rezerection, Scotland's famous allnighters promoter, when he was booked to play the first two and a half hours of the night (the longest set by any dj who appeared at Rez).
The following year saw another release, "EFFECT", and included a Scott Brown remix. The EP proved to be a big success and was subsequently licensed to several albums that year. On the back of the appearance at Rez and the two releases on Clubscene his weekends were now full, constantly criss-crossing central scotland appearing at clubs in all of Scotland's major cities. Also due to record sales, other clubs beyond Scotland were getting interested in having him appear at their venues and he had his first set in Northern Ireland at "Circus Circus" and his first gig in England at Stockton's notorious "Colleseum".
Rez came knocking again, this time he was to represent his country in the USA V Scotland theme night. Sadly, a broken crossfader was to rob any enjoyment of that particular event! DJ Ten's third release, "Tennant's Special EP" was a massive seller due to to killer tracks by the man himself as well as two stormin' mixes by two of Scotland's biggest names, Marc Smith & Ultra-Sonic. It was subsequently licensed for release in Australia and was also licensed to numerous albums.
Further DJing appearances included Exit 15 in Northern Ireland, The Dock in Liverpool, Life/Asylum in Manchester, Destiny in Bournemouth and Club Kinetic in Stoke as well as all the usual Scottish events, like Nosebleed in Rosyth where he gained a position as resident dj. His next release quickly after his previous single was a mix album, volume 2 of Clubscene's "Slammin Sets" series, which went down well in the UK as well as Germany and was also licensed for release in Poland.
The following year he appeared at the huge outdoor Rezerection bash, Event III, playing to around 4,000 in an outdoor marquee. An event he thoroughly he enjoyed, though it was to be his last appearance at Rez. He did appear once more though at the famous Royal Highland Centre, this time on Hogmanay for Bass Generator's "Judgement Day" event.
His last 12"/CD release was one of his personal favourites, "Aquarium" which was produced with Clubscene stablemate Marc Smith. Sadly it wasn't to get the recognition it deserved as by the time it was released, Scotland's hardcore scene was starting to dismantle. Later that year he took a break, just performing the odd appearances here and there, playing "old skool" sets.
By 2000, he was ready for a change in direction and alongside Alan Laidlaw (MC Madman) and Tom Wilson they started up Mondo, a monthly hard trance event in Edinburgh. The club had a short life (approx 18 months) but was not without it's successes. They had a huge night with a Rachel Auburn appearance, a British debut appearance form DJ Gius (the man behind the Zombie Nation remix) and the birthday bash sponsored by Mixmag hosted Nick Rafferty & DJ Ziad alongside Mondo's residents Tencini (DJ Ten), Aldovos (MC Madman) and Sergio Amoni (Tom Wilson)
Although he had been involved in a hard house & trance club night he couldn't resist the hardcore bug (not that he wanted to) and he started appearing more at events with old skool sets in Glasgow and Newcastle. It wasn't until late 2005 that he started playing 'the fresh stuff' again though. Gigs at Twisted in Glasgow and Addiction in Forres were quickly followed by his appearance at Fantazia's Big Bang II in Glasgow's Braehead Arena marking the 'return' of DJ Ten. |
