DJ Fallout Interview

When did you first start DJ'ng?
It was about two years ago, it was when I was working at a record shop called “Sound House”. We started getting some dance music in and we sold quite a lot, so we set up a room downstairs, I got some Technics 1200 and my brother Danny bought some too and U used them to practise until I was good enough to play.

When did you get your first break?
I played at the Fibre Optics Parties (which are run by my brother Danny) and SS heard me at one of them and booked me, from there I started getting booking by other people.

Who are you musically influenced by?
If it’s a DJ I would say Carl Cox, or Grooverider, as I listened to them when I used to go to the events before I became a DJ. Also Mikey Wilson, because he always said he would teach me how to DJ, but it never happened, so I got my own decks, this was about the beginning of last year.

What made you want to have a career in DJ'ing?
I enjoyed doing it and it just sort of like happened, the more I played at places the more I wanted to play different places.

What was it like getting to where you are now?
Quite hard although it is hard for anyone at the moment, I’ve just got to be thankful that I have got where I am now.

Do you think being on of the few female DJ’s that it give you an edge?
Well, maybe in some ways, but other people might think that because I am a female that they have the right to look down their noses, but you just have to show them you know what you are doing.

Where is you main following?
The Midlands

How much would you say the scene has changed?
I think that I has changed in all different ways, for one the people change, and some of the vents do not seem to be as busy or as mad as they were a couple of years ago, but then you get the good event that is. The music has got faster, and there are all different styles of music now, I think it went through phases where the scene was more Techno, then more Breakbeat or Reggae but now you have all the different types playing all at the same time so the people have more to choose from.

Which type of music do you think has the biggest following?
Both must have a large following or they wouldn’t co-exist, hardcore and mellow in the record shops, people seem to settle for the mellow I don’t know whether they will turn back to Hardcore.

What is your personal preference in music?
Definitely Hardcore. But I don’t dislike mellow, its all house music.

Do you think that there is a problem where some of the DH's tend to keep good records and play them for a certain amount of time get labelled as playing old records?
Well I think it is really nice when you got to an all night party to hear on DJ play things that you haven’t heard before, and for another to play old tunes, I know that when I got to rave myself I really enjoy hearing tunes that I know as well as new ones.

What music projects can you put your name to?
I did some stuff with essence of Aura a couple of years ago, and a couple of tracks with Tango, and I am currently working on stuff of my own.

Who do you think is making the best music both Hardcore and Techno?
Basement Records and Jack Smooth have hot it pretty well sorted. Most labels can produce good records and like Formation, have hot a lot of stuff due out that I have heard and its pretty good.

What are your views on MC's as a whole?
I like them as long as they do not say too much, and their voice isn’t too over powering and loud.

Do you think it is a good idea that a lot of DJ’s take their own MC's with them?
I think that a lot of people look forward to hearing two people working together, Bukem, Conrad and Top Buzz being examples.
