DJ Grooverider - Interview part C - 1993Grooverider Interview 1 part 2 So what do you personally prefer playing? I haven't got a preference, I'd play garage if I could. That the end of the day its all House, you've got faster versions and you've got different versions, it shouldn't of been split up. People are saying you've got this kind of House and another kind of House so you have parties for each kind of them, it shouldn't be like that, its supposed to be in the same place because its all the same thing. |

When you go to an event you don't work back to back do you, pre-planned? No you can't pre-plan things because it depends on the type of crowd.
How many records do you take with you? About 300, 2 box's and a bag. So if your in the middle of a Techno set and you wanted to drop something old like Justice of Mercy would you just drop it? Yeh, I wouldn't care. If I think its there, its great yeh, I'd just play it. I've got an added advantage because I don't even have to put a record on and the crowd is on my side so I'm more relaxed than the next man that walks in the room. I don't get nervous, I can play in front of 30,000 people and its like playing in front of 500 to me. Its like playing to myself because that's what I'm thinking. There seems to be a lot more people coming onto the scene calling themselves MC's..... Get rid of the lot of them! I hate them, when I started MC's weren't even heard of, it was a sin to pick up a mic, that's what we tried to get away from, disco clubs in the 80's where DJ's were talking on the mic - we don't need all that so what are they bringing it back for. You don't need someone telling you when to dance, I don't mind certain MC's but when you get them ranting on all night it does my head in. Have you ever been on with one where you just wanted to unplug his mic? I have done many times, I've told the MC's to get off , many times. A lot of the MC's are scarred of me and they know that when I come in they've got to put the mic down. I don't mind really big parties because when you've got 20,000 people you need someone to tell you something because half the time you can't even hear anything. In a decent venue you don't need all that shit in your head. There's a couple of good MC's around the country, the ones who don't say to much, know when to let the music play, when your to hear someone ranting and raging you just want them to shut up. What MC's do you rate then? I don't mind Lenny when he's not ranting and raving, I don't really know the MC's, Everson is easily the best in the country, Ratpack, he's one of a kind. How much do you spend on new music each week? That's untold, it depends what's there, I buy all sorts, the only thing I don't buy is progressive, I'm not really into that - I think its fake music personally. I like proper House, people call it garage but I call it House, I buy Rap, Jungle it can vary, I spend, including my Dub plates, around an average of £300. Fabio seems to of been on the scene with you since the start but you've both managed to keep your own styles, do you not worry about your music being similar? No, I don't know what it is about me and him, we never picked out this and that, we just had a right chemistry that was meant to be. Is there any bitching between the DJ's? It depends on what kind of DJ's your talking about because the only bitterness that's comes is from DJ's off the other circuit, they think all we can play is Jungle and Techno even though they are TRYING to play Techno. All of a sudden they want to play Garage and that's something we have been playing since day one, its only because our hardcore has progressed and they have jumped into our old style, of they want to pick up things a few years late that's their business but they shouldn't slag us off because were doing something different. Magazines slag us off like Mixmag, they never accept us as DJ's, if anyone read Mixmag they wouldn't even know who we are even though we are some of the top DJ's on the country, they profile people who aren't really doing nothing. Dame with record companies, they want to get the good music, make it commercial and then fuck you off - so they can fuck off. Mixmag and DJ magazine, they don't do nothing for the music. AT the end of the day we get 30,000 people at one party so we must be the biggest, they do little progressive night for 1000 people and try telling us that's running the show, what running the show? Common maths tells us what is running the show. They say that music is better than that because that sounds better to us - not what really happening. When you get back from a long weekend do you ever feel like packing it all in? No, there's a lot harder work out there, I do work hard, I drive myself all over the country but at least I'm doing something I enjoy. I've got the whole week to relax 0 the more work the better. How much do you play out in the week then? I don't play out in the week at all, that's one rule I've always had over the years, one of the only things, it would be draining out my name and draining out myself. What sort of music do you chill out to when you come home? House music, probably more mellow House in my car. Other people's music or your own tapes? I listen to tapes, the radio, you can never know enough. Do you ever amaze yourself and think about how far you've come up? No, I've never really thought about that, I still think I've got a long way to go personally. You've not reached your goal yet then? No, definitely not, until this music is accepted how it should be accepted I haven't done my job. So you keep yourself to yourself? Yeh, that's the way I am, I only try. What about in a years time. Do you think your name will still be one of the biggest in the scene in years to come? It's going to have to be, at the end of the day I want to move this scene forward, I want this music accepted, I will be there in some shape or form. I'm trying as hard now as I was four years ago. Do you still get as much of a buzz now as you did when you first started out, do you still get as much of enjoyment out of it? Yeh, after a couple of spliffs I'm away man. I just like playing music whether its to 2000 people or 2000 people I just don't care. Do you ever go to events your not playing at? Yeh, I like to check out what other people are doing, listen in case there's certain sounds missing out of my set, you may be able to use things in your set but in a different way, in your way. A set includes a lot of different things, people have got to start playing there own sets, start playing 2 hour sets again, you can't do any damage in a hour and that's why music gets repeated because sets are to short. Promoters have got to start booking two hour sets again. If you could change anything what would you change? I wouldn't, its going alright, if I could have a wish I'd keep everything as it is now.
