MC Man Parris - Interview 1993How long have you been an MC? About 6 years properly, I didn't know I was MC'ing at the time, I was a DJ at first, I was an all around DJ - Soul, Hip Hop, Pop, everything. |

So where did you first start out doing it? I first started about '88, in a little club, I'd DJ and chat and just started to get better and better. So what influenced you to start MC'ing full time? I didn't really have any choice, people just started to book me as an MC, I'd turn up with my records and managers would say we don't want you to DJ we want you to MC. Would you describe yourself as a lyrical MC or a crowd Hype MC? Purely crowd, I feed of the crowd, I get into it and it just take me away. How much time do you spend on new material? Not alot really, everything just goes off the top of my head, I hear words out of the records, I wouldn't ever take the lyrics off another MC, I'm to busy saying my own stuff. Nothing is rehearsed. I call myself the seeker, I go looking even if its testing a drug which is going to come into the scene, I check it out and tell people about it through my lyrics. Do you go out of your way to be controversial and more of a serious MC? It's just natural really, but saying that I used to have parties at my house, Doc Scott would come round, a few others and we'd practice and he'd tell me if I was coming out with any crap, they'd say "don't use that or that was wicked" that helped a lot and I learnt more about the music. When I MC I'm with the DJ so I enhance what the DJ's trying to say. What type of music do you prefer MC'ing to? It depends on my mood, but I can do anywhere, if I start off mellow I can do the hardcore but not the other way round. I like to be an all rounder. I'd prefer to hear the DJ on his / her own, just do a big introduction but if you've got nothing to say don't say it. Do you not think its a bit unfair the amount of people that get a break as an MC, but for a DJ that break is twice as hard to find? Definitely, I think you've got happy shopper MC's and you've got Harrods MC's and its the same with DJ's. I mean I've got nothing against Grooverider or Carl Cox but some of the new names coming up not are like WOW, same with the MC's. I'd ay that where ever your from you should promote yours with the big names, too many clubs have the same line ups every time. When your on the Mic what would you say is you main prerogative? Give them a good time, take them out of what ever there in and once you've got them take them for a ride. So you let the DJ do his thing and you do yours? Yeah! Do you ever compete against the DJ? No, but some DJ's try to throw me off or catch me out. I man Grooverider can throw me if he want to, he'll like slow the beats down or cut straight to the next track and I'll be in mid flight, when this happened you think, o' you got me that time, but is a bit of fun, a laugh. Do you think that MC's get less attention as the DJ or do you think this is all part of the music system? I did used to think this at one time, I'd see DJ's in magazines and that, but I just thought well I'm enjoying myself so why have bitter feelings. How serious do you take you job? If you see me MC'ing you'll be luck to get a word out of me and that the truth, its the same as DJ'ing when you get a groove going, if anyone was to interrupt you you'd probably hit them, so it can be like that for me, I get a lot of kids coming up stuttering and trying to express themselves. I remember one time at Shelley's when a guy came up and stood in front of me while I was chatting away on the Mic, he was mumbling and trying to say something. Then someone said look down, the guy was stood there with his dick out, really happy and smiling. So do you like people coming up to you (not with their dicks out) and asking for birthday shouts and mentions or do you just see it as people using you? I know when someone's genuine. I look at them and I'm pretty good judge, if it gets too much I just say Happy Birthday to everyone and that's it finished, no more requests now! I try not to do it on Grooverider because its not his style, he's serious, well not serious but cool, I think I know him now. He's different from the rest. When I first started we didn't get on - I used to book the Amnesia House DJ's, if times collided it was left to me to tell DJ's they had an hour not hour and a half, Grooverider would pack up his records and barge past you accidentally on purpose like. That's how we got to know each other but I was just doing my job - a dirty job. Do you get on well with the mother MC's and DJ's? The DJ's yeah bit its the MC's I have trouble with, there was a bit of slander between me and Robbie Dee but its all sorted out now. So where have you been for the past year? Back in November I got caught up in that evil thing called Crack, and it was just oblivion, nothing nice to say about it, things got bad, it got to the stage where I nearly died. Because I was earning a lot of money and living on my own it kept calling me, that's what its like, its just so hard to get off. Word got round and I started to lose bookings and weight, and started to look really bad. I just thought to myself sort it out now so with the help of my friends and family I'm back again. Do you think you've now got a big advantage, you've been through it and can warn others what its like on the Mic where the DJ is limited to expressing through the music? Yeah, a DJ is very limited, very harmless without a MC. Around Christmas with the recession things got very dark but now the summers coming things are getting different, more lighter. So which MC's do you rate then? Five O, Cool and Deadly in his day, I know he's been off the scene for a while but he was the only MC I used to really worry about, he was bad. Also Patrick from Top Buzz, don't know what he's saying but he just takes me away. What about DJ's? Grooverider, Sasha, Carl Cox and there isn't a lot DJ's I actually like because of there attitude. What DJ's would you like to work with? I'd like to work with all the DJ's if I could. Whats the best event you have ever done? The best ones got to be Book of Love, an Amnesia House event when Mickey Lynas was married, that was like WOW, I couldn't get off the mic - respect to Mickey. How did you get involved with Altern 8 last year? Nuff respect to Altern 8, it was through Shelley's , we were just friends. They used to play down the Lazerdome and if I was there they'd ask me to MC on them. They did a television PA on Channel 4 and they asked me to come on it with them, that was wicked. Then after this they phoned me up and said they were gonna use a sample of mine, this got to number 3 in the charts. There good boys, you can't knock them. Do you see yourself as a role model? Yeah, I think deep down in the kids they know, and they treat me like me, they tell me I'm number one and even if one person comes up to me and say that's wicked then that had made my night. What other plans do you have for the future? Well I've got something ready at the moment, awaiting a studio, its kind of like a mellow soul to soul like track with 60% of the money going towards the parents that have lost their kids due to drugs at raves, the rest to charity. What I'm wanting to do with the sleeve is people pay £50 and get their name onto it. I'm hoping to get the record out by the summer. |
