DJ Mike Freedom Interview 2008

Mikee Freedom was a DJ who was around from the start of the acid house scene, he had a big hit under the alias of Nomad with the song "I wanna give you devotion".  He still DJ's/MC's at club around the Bristol area.

So how did it all begin?
Way back when early 80's reggae and hip hop.

Where did the name come from? Mikee is my first name and freedom came from Freedom of speech

What gave you that initial push? 
Total dedication & alot of Devotion

Did the Djing, Production, Promoting come 1st?
No I was a Mc/host at partys b4 I span on the turntables
 
Who’s throwing the best parties at the moment?
The ones with all the Cash

Which other countries have you played/put parties on? USA / Holland / Canada / Wales / Scotland / Belgium / France

What was the first event you ever played at/put on?
One of my memorable performances was at the ritzy in Tottenham back in 91

What’s the best event you’ve played at/put on?
Early 80's rave PERCEPTION near Longleat Safari Park was on the bill with the ragga twins

What was your first record you bought?
Think it was womblin merry Christmas I was about 5 haha

Out of all the tunes you have, which one ‘never fails?’ Gwen Mcraie (All this love) or cheril lynn (Got to be real)

What's you favourite tune of all time?
I've got too many to mention

When all the partying is over how do you like to chill out?
Go home get a nice pint of ice cold Red Stripe lax out on the sofa and watch a good film

So how is the scene in your eyes at the moment?
Tooooo Grimey I must be getting old

What's is your real name if you use an alias and how old are you?
I'm Mikee by name and 38

Where do you live?
In my home town of Bristol

What can you remember of playing/being at a Fantazia?
Spliff head (Ragga twins)

How big is your vinyl collection? What do you think of CDJ's?
Record collection is huge don't use cdj's but I guess some dj's gotta move with the technology.

Funniest thing that ever happened at an event?
In the middle of performing devotion when promoting the single in 91 in dundee the mic lead fell out and the vocal track kept running so I had to do an accapella to prove I could do it live haha.

Dj Bunjy/ Norman Jay/Paul Trouble Anderson/Rat Pack/ & all the old skool dj's still doing the do

What are your feelings on the MC's?
Like ever some good some bad some terrible some should shut the F**k up so the listener can here a bit of the tune... d: )

What do you do outside of the dance music scene?
I have 2 beautiful children that keep me busy

What advice would you give to up and coming DJs/Promoters?
Keep striving for what you believe in Total dedication & a lot of Devotion..

When you play is this pre planned set?
Never I always end up taking more flight cases than I need but u never know what kind of crowd your gunna get from one gig to the next..

When was the 1st time you visited Ibiza?
Was it to holiday or to play? = A bit of both

Anything else you want to say? Any shouts?
Yes big shout to my fellow Bristolians & to the next big thing to come out of Bristol (LAIDBLAK)

If you could stage a rave anywhere, where would you choose?
South Africa on the day Mugabe gets kicked out of office

How do you see the scene 5 years from now?
Whatever the scene I will still play the classics to educate the next generation of where there musical roots come from haha...

If you had a time machine what year would you go back to and why?
1988 because that was the best generation of music for alot of styles.

Yeah id like to shout very loud coz I got the dreaded Man flu ....
