DJ The ProducerDJ The Producer's name is Luke MacMillan, he started playing small parties in Glastonbury promoted by various people like John Clark and Mr Dee. He increased his following over the years and started to receive more national bookings. His big break was meeting Paul Shurrey & Rob Vega the owners / promoters for massive rave company Universe and later Tribal Gathering. The Producer first played the Universe party 'Mind Body and Soul' playing a classic old skool set and he has never looked back. Friendship with MC Ribbs lead to regular performances at Plymouths The Warehouse, and together they set up the Revelation night, which focused on techno, which originally was held at Verbeer Manor in Devon, increasing The Producers popularity and connections. The Producer continues to play in his own style of hardcore techno and plays at major events like Helter Skelter and Dreamscape. DJ Producer Fantazia Interview 2007 So how did it all begin? I was a bedroom dj into hip-hop from about 1986—1989---in 1989 I went to college and met my now long time friend and mentor mr “dee” dave pardue. He introduced me to the whole m25 / London acid house and rave scene. He threw one of the first small underground house parties I ever went to, and by
The beginning of 1990 he suggested I go to London with him to go to my first “legal” warehouse party. That was energy at docklands arena. I remember realising that night, the dj was pivotal in all of this and I said to myself then and there this is what I want to do with my life.
What gave you that initial push? I think the chance meeting with the “soon to be” promoters of universe at an illegal party in bath. I remember after a set I had played I got talking with these 2 guys, and they were insistent that they were going to put on some large parties round our way and would I like to dj for them.
Of course I jumped at the chance, and as history now shows—they were right----universe put on some spectacular events and I got to play on virtually all of them.
Did the Djing or Production come 1st? I was djing years before I even considered music production. I think music prod. Almost happened by accident.
Who’s throwing the best parties at the moment? Hard to really. Slammin vinyl are doing really good things at the minute, as are Uproar and HTID, Fantazia was beyond amazing and I look forward to hopefully return there at some point, I've also done numerous gigs in Holland this year—and all were outrageous including DEFQON festival, dominator festival, nightmare outdoor, Decibel festival, beter kom je niet, raving nightmare…and I will again be playing at thunderdome this year---and those are for about 35,000 ---in one arena!!!!!!
Which other countries have you played/put parties on? The Netherlands, France, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Italy and I will be returning to Australia at the end of the year to play Melbourne and Sydney.
What’s the best event you’ve played at/put on? Universes “Mind, Body, Soul, and the universe” September 11th 1992. That is the gig I first ever played a complete techno set publicly---and promoters went so mad for it the decision was almost made for me to become a techno dj.
What was your first record you bought? Blondies “heart of glass”….I was 5 and I bought it with 1 and 2ps my mum had saved for me. How sickeningly sweet is that????
Out of all the tunes you have, which one ‘never fails?’ Its hard to single out 1 out of over 25,000….so I'm not going to.
When all the partying is over how do you like to chill out? Wii wii wii wii WII !!!!!!!! Did I mention my wii????????
So how is the scene in your eyes at the moment? In the UK—fragile, but constant---in Europe—MASSIVE.
What's is your real name if you use an alias and how old are you? Luke Mcmillan and I am now 35 years young
Where do you live? Bath, south west united kingdom
What can you remember of playing/being at a Fantazia? It was completely bang off!!! And it was also the biggest attendance at any Scottish gig since the heady days of Resurrection---total respect
How big is your vinyl collection? What do you think of CDJ's? Like I said earlier, round about 25,000---I hate cd’s but they are a damm sight cheaper than dubplates!!!!!!
Funniest thing that ever happened at an event? I don’t do “funny”. And normally if anything “happens” to a dj, its usually bad (like turntables breaking down or idiots spilling drinks into record bags etc….)
Other DJs you rate? They are all rubbish.
What are your feelings on the MC's? For me their is only 1 mc---and his name is ribbz. I have no feeling on any other mc because 90% of the time they suck.
What do you do outside of the dance music scene? As little as possible.
What advice would you give to up and coming DJs? Like me---be persistent to the point of annoying---if you have real talent it will be spotted for sure.
When you play is this pre planned set? NEVER NEVER NEVER!!!!!!
When was the 1st time you visited Ibiza? Was it to holiday or to play? I have never been there……they wouldn’t want me polluting there pretty little island now, would they??? Hahahaha…….
Any shouts you would like to make? Big up all new school crew---you keep old gits like me young. Big up fantasia for doing it right.
Luke Mcmillan a.k.a the dj producer OUT.
