DJ Shock C - Profile 1994Coming from a musical family, with both his father and sister being DJ’s, it was only a natural progression for him to start playing as well. |

In 1988 when the sound of House was coming over from Chicago with the likes of Raze, Steve ‘Silk’ Hurley and Marshall Jefferson, Shock C took an exceptional liking to the tempo and style of it. Shock C tells me his early influences in the scene came from the likes of Grooverider, Fabio and Carl Cox, which Shock C has a great deal of respect for. Clearly because they have worked hard and have been on the scene from the beginning.
His first break in the DJ’ing door came from Man Parris (which he thanks to this day) at the Tally Ho pub and Reflections nightclub in Coventry. In those days he was playing a mixture of early House, Hip Hop, Acid and Funk, and it wasn’t until the Eclipse opened in Coventry, that Shock C got the biggest break of his career.
“I managed to get my foot in the door a couple of months after it had opened thanks to Stu and Baz (then owners). Getting into a club of that capacity, and at that moment inn time, I was over the moon. That club was one of the first all night clubs that set the pace”.
Well, once Shock C managed to establish a name for himself at one of Britain’s biggest all night rave clubs, work started to come in. It was at this stage that he decided to give up his daytime job as a trainee mechanic. Working all night DJ’ing and then rolling into a garage to work Saturday morning was beginning to affect his health, (not to mention the punters motors!!). Well, when The Edge (formerly The Eclipse) finally closed its doors in Coventry, Shock C had already started to spread his wings and play at various venues around the country. Some promoters had approached him to play at their events whilst others he had approached. As with different venues, so the music began to differ, so it all depended where and who he was playing for. He describes the music he plays at the moment as intelligent dance music, he likes to keep an open mind with regards to the different styles. He does prefer to play more on the Drum ‘n’ Bass side, vocals, strings with a touch of Ragga. He mainly tries to keep everybody happy by keeping a flow.
On the production side of things Shock C likes the kind of stuff that Dillinja is putting out along with Roni Size, Back 2 Basics, SS, Ray Keith, L Double, Tango, Nookie and Bukem. He believes that there are a lot of guys out there making good intelligent music, who are taking a lot of time and effort over what they do. It can be heard in the finished product.
During the day, Shock C manages the basement section of Don Christies Records in Birmingham, keeping punters in touch with the music and various events. He has just got residency at the new Edge club in Sheffield and can be heard at various clubs and events in and around the Midlands.
The future looks very bright for Shock C. Recently released ‘Crazy Fealings/on the Level’ with Ellis The Menace, is already selling well on Back 2 Basics, he is also working on some other projects with a guy called Mark Morris (Flex Records). Basically he just wants to see the music progress, therefore he wants to get into the production side of things, then onto remixing for others.
He has proved to many that the music is not just a part time thing for him. He loves the positive parts of the scene and believes it is here to stay for a long time to come. Shock C pledges to contribute to the best of his ability to this scene, which he loves and believes in.
