Well, at last it arrived, the BIG countdown to 1995, and what a setting to bring in the New Year, non other than Cornwall Coliseum, home of the Dance Planet organisation. The theme for the event was ‘THE DETONATOR’ – The party was set to explode – and explode it did with 5,000 party maniacs on board to witness this spectacular evening. |

The Cornwall Coliseum is a huge concert hall which has played host to glamorous stars such as Cliff Richard, Meat Loaf and many other people from the rock and pop scene. Interior decoration of the venue was 100% wicked, with interactive UV drapes, massive projection screens, huge inflatable sculptures, an Ibiza style foam machine and an amazing multiple laser show. In fact every possible ingredient was there to create the perfect setting for a historic evening!
The night’s proceedings were kicked off by Planet regular DJ Energy, a DJ from Wolverhampton who is becoming increasingly popular in the South West. His style is normally on a Jungle tip, but for this event he altered his style to happy/piano Hardcore, which went down wickedly with the South West massive, proving what a versatile DJ he can be! Next up was supposed to be the man like Seduction who is also another DJ smashing it up in the South West, Seduction’s car over-heated 4 miles away from Bristol and by the time the very nice man from the AA arrived it was too late to continue onwards to Dance Planet as he had other bookings to attend before the night was out. Seduction sends his apologies to all who attended the event and promises to smash the place up at the next event here in the S.W. Following on from Energy came a British lad with one hell of a talent, Fibre Optic’s very own Tango, who changed the tempo with his live P. A. supplying some swift drum ‘n’ bass which dropped in quite nicely, even though the South West crew love Techno and happy Hardcore, well done!!
The next gladiator to spin those wheels was Plymouth’s No. 1 DJ Apache, is another Dance Planet regular. Unfortunately I missed his set as I was doing some back stage work for the video that was being filmed of the event, I asked a few ravers what they thought and they all gave him the thumbs up, so I guess that he rocked the place too!
By now the end of 1994 was fast approaching. To take everyone into the auditorium on a musical journey through to 1995 came the Producer, ripping up house tune after tune causing untold structural damage to the building. Then it came, 30 seconds to 1995 and the music began to fade out, I asked the whole arena of 5,000 people to form one huge link of unity and with every pair of hands in the place elevated towards the heavens, the infamous countdown began…. “10 .. 9 .. 8 .. 7 .. 6 .. 5 .. 4 .. 3 .. 2 .. 1 .. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!” As the crowd erupted into a mass of noise and celebration. The Producer then slammed on the next track as everybody went crazy for the next couple of minutes before the music was cut again and the Planet massive were instructed by myself to correspond to the words “Drop The Bomb” and that when I announce these words, they are to make the most noise they have ever made in their life. I stood on the end of the stage overlooking an enormous sea of ravers and announced, “Dance Planet crew, DROP .. THE .. BOMB”. The crowd responded back and as they did, the whole stage blew up into a wicked Pyrotechnics display covering the whole arena in smoke and exploding lights. With the multiple lasers doing full battle ‘The Detonator’ was fully launched bringing 1995 in with an almighty B-A-N-G!! Eventually things calmed a little and it was time to say farewell to The Producer and enter the surprise guest DJ – who was rumoured to be Carl Cox. However, Carl was in Berlin playing House – the guest came in the form of Wales No.1 – DJ Lomas who mixed it up for the South West massive in fine style as he served a helping of Techno and happy Breakbeat.
For the final hour of this eventful night, DJ Scorpio, the man of the moment as far as the South West is concerned, had arrived after a grueling 4 hour drive from Dreamscape in Milton Keynes. Although tired from the journey he had saved enough energy to finish off the nights proceedings with some serious Techno sounds to the delight of the Cornwall crowd!!
In arena 2, DJ’s playing were Mastervibe from the South West and Worm who is a Pandemonium regular, plus DJ Chemistry, a young lad destined for a bright future, respect to you all! MC’s on the night covering the whole event were myself (Magika), MC Stixman who is set for stardom in 1995, alongside MC’s Ranger T, Musclehead and Strawberry who all complimented the music with their individual styles, nice one guys!
Everything during the event was 100% positive and going extremely well until one stupid person on the stage upset me. Before I continue, I love to see people from the crowd up on the stage and strutting their stuff. However, this stage could have been run better – please keep this in mind next time Mr. Promoter. Now time to expose the idiot who attempted to ruin everyone’s fun. She was a young girl aged 18-21 wearing a black Obsession jacket and managed to remain on the stage for most of the night even though she was thrown off a few times! First of all she started swearing at me for no reason at all, the she appointed herself as the stage manager and started to eject anyone and everyone off the stage and capped it all off by saluting the crowd with her middle finger.
I don’t know why she behaved in this manner, maybe she was seeking some attention, but she was definitely out of order! Didn’t she read the statement on the flyer before coming to the event? It read, “Please remember that Dance Planet is about getting good vibes, meeting new friends, having fun and generally being mad. People who have bad attitudes are not accepted”. Fortunately her behaviour did not reflect on the rest of the people who attended the event – the South West massive are one of the most friendliest and happiest crew in the country – so next time Mr. Promoter please make sure the right people are on the stage for the right reasons. Anyway, enough of the negative bits. Overall, the event ran really well, with only a few minor hiccups encountered which were easily dealt with. I understand some of the ravers were disappointed about Seduction not making the event, but don’t worry, he assures me he’ll be there next time.
Well, there we have it, Dance Planet stepped into the future in fine style with 1995 promising to be the year of the SLAMMER. If you have not yet attended an event here in the South West, all I can say is, “It is a must for every hardcore nutter in the land. So I’ll see you there!!”.
