Galactica - Profile

We started the Galactica raves in the early nineties. The first event was at Scarborough Spa which attracted 2500 people. I was mainly involved on the publicity side of things as I had a limited knowledge of the dance industry and basically picked up things as i went along. One of my partners had been on the periphery of things for a few years and asked me if id like to get involved.

The club scene was a little stale at the time and people were looking for something more of a special event every now and again so i thing we catered for that quite well.

We were influenced by big events like Raindance and Fantazia but did things a little differently and on a slightly smaller scale, York our biggest event attracted around 7000 ravers.

We organised the first big rave in Paris with the help of the then not quite so famous dj Laurent Garnier who promoted the event on radio TV and thru live appearances. It attracted 5000 Parisians and we took over 1500 from the UK. The event took place in a large leisure centre which was connected to a huge indoor water theme park. Some of the locals hadn't seen anything like it but they loved the night. We sold tickets through Virgin Megastore and FNAK which is the French version of Ticketmaster, but at that time u couldn't find out how many tickets had been sold until the night and were pretty relieved when we saw the queues outside. Thanks to Laurent Garnier for many of those people!

The best event we did was definitely at York Racecourse it had a great vibe on the night and people were really up for it, in fact many people still say it was the best night they ever had. N-Joi topped the bill but we also had Dream Frequency, Carl Cox and Utah Saints who to me were the best act on the night and my favourite of all time....they built up an atmosphere like no-one else and were lovely guys very very talented, i loved the Kate Bush sample they did called "Something Good" it was the highlight of a magic night!

The first record I bought was You Are The Sunshine Of My Life by Stevie Wonder.....which suggests I aren't a teenager any more!

The best dance track I heard was also Something Good by the Utahs its one of those songs that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end it never fails, I could listen to it over and over and never get tired of it.

My favourite tune of all time is the remix of Rehab by Amy Winehouse I love that girls voice...she went to school with one of my daughters so I saw her a few times she was a major talent when she was 14 I just hope she gets her private life sorted out but I think some of it is spin to give her a darker image.

I think the dance scene is pretty stagnant at the moment and has been for a long time...it really needs a a kick in the butt something similar to the punk scene and its effect on rock music scene.

I now live I Bulgaria and I'm over 44ish!

I never actually went to a Fantazia but I heard some great stuff....I'm one of those people who likes to do things my own way and if I went I would have been influenced and probably ended up sub conscieniously copying things which would have been boring.

The funniest thing that happened at an event was in Paris when we realised we didn't have enough drinks to sell so we went out to a wholesale outlet and bought loads of water beer and other alcohol but then realised the venue was then closed so we hid it on a building site under some tarpaulin and one of our guys had to sit and guard the stuff until we hired a van to collect it the next morning...our guy didn't drive though as he was pissed!

My favourite DJs are Laurent Garnier... he's a genius and a guy called DJ Tripp who was from our hometown of Scarborough and worked at all our events...he is as good as a lot of the top guys but didn't quite get the recognition he deserved but always played a great set!

MC's can make or break a night so we were very careful who went on stage "make some fuckin noise" just didn't quite hack it.

Finally a big shout to Laurent Garnier who has got where he is through hard work and huge talent....a great role model for all up and coming DJS.
