Terry Turbo - Interview 2009

This is an interview done by Terry Stone aka Terry Turbo for Fantazia in 2009:

So how did it all begin? Where did the name come from?
I came up with the name "One Nation" after hearing a song which had the lyrics "One Nation Under a groove, getting down just for the fun of it..........

What gave you that initial push?
I loved raving and as I had The Scene Magazine, A flyering company and a ticket agency it seemed like the next logical step to actually get into promoting.

Who’s throwing the best parties at the moment?
One Nation is still in my opinion the best promotion and when I sold it in 2003 I made sure that it was going to a good home and that it was going to be looked after and I'm pleased to say its still going strong 6 years on.

Which other countries have you played/put parties on?
Worldwide nearly all of them.

When all the partying is over how do you like to chill out?
I used to like to chill out by turning my phone off and going off to a foreign country for a couple of weeks in a 5* hotel where no one knew me with my girlfriend.

So how is the scene in your eyes at the moment?
Its changed a lot and as an old timer I think I definitely saw the best years and although its still going strong I think that if they ever invent time travel everyone should go back in time just to go to a One Nation at Wembley or One Nation at the Roller Express or Astoria to see how great it used to be.

Out of all the tunes you have, which one ‘never fails?’
My favourite tune of all time has to be "One Nation Under A Groove". Or whatever its called?

What's is your real name if you use an alias and how old are you?
My real name is Terry Stone and I am 38 years old now.  I now live in Windsor, Berkshire.

What can you remember of being at a Fantazia?
I remember Matchams in Bournemouth that was probably one of the best Fantazia raves in my opinion.

Funniest thing that ever happened at an event?
The funniest thing that happened at my events was when we hired the lookalikes, we had Prince Charles, The Queen, Prince William, The Beckhams, Madonna & Ali G and just watching the ravers faces when they saw them was worth every penny.

Which DJs do you rate?
Hype, Andy C, Slipmatt, The Ratpack and Randall were my favourites and were without a doubt the most popular performers.

What are your feelings on the MC's?
The MC's were great they hyped up the crowd and got everyone cheering and making noise.

What do you do outside of the dance music scene?
I sold my Rave businesses in 2003 to pursue a career in acting and filmmaking and in just 6 short years I'm well established and on average act and produce between 6 - 7 films per year, which is ironic as I used to put that amount of large scale events on every year when One Nation was at its peak.

What advice would you give to up and coming Dj's/MC's?
Work hard and never give up (it will take time you can't just become a top DJ/MC or Promoter overnight!) and always make sure whatever you do has a good quality and value to it, you can't do anything well if you try and do it on the cheap and there are no short cuts in business or life.

When was the 1st time you visited Ibiza? Was it to holiday or to play?
The first time I went to Ibiza was in 1995 and it was to play, I couldn't believe how expensive it was and to be honest I was really into Drum And Bass, Hardcore and Old Skool not House so I didn't really enjoy it.

Any shouts you would like to make?
I would like to say thank you to everyone who read The Scene Magazine went to One Nation, Garage Nation and Dreamscape and supported me over the years.

If you could stage a rave anywhere, where would you choose?
I would like to stage a rave in Popham Airfield, I went to The Vision rave there and that was an amazing night!

How do you see the scene 5 years from now?
I think the ravescene will still be going but it seems to be shrinking every year now as new music and new things come along for the next generation of clubbers to do and I think taking drugs is becoming a big no no. Back in the day it was a new thing and everyone got swept up in it and if you went clubbing and took drugs it was no biggie because it was seen as a recreational thing and something you just did on the weekend.

There was never any random drug testing at work or when you got pulled over by the Police roadside drug testing so now if people do take drugs they can lose there driving license, job etc and most people just don't want to risk it, I think this has had a huge effect on raving.

If you had a time machine what year would you go back to and why?
If I had a time machine I would go back to 1992-1993 it was my favourite time of the club scene.

KnightRider or A-team?
A-Team.

Any shouts you would like to make?
My Mum who was the backbone of my rave business, my missus Maxine, my 3 wonderful Children Jade, Alfie and Harrison and all my friends and family how worked with me, looked after me you all know who you are.
