Their experiences inspirers many other to explore the origins and effects of magic mushrooms and to work out the active chemicals giving that effect. By the 1970's many species of psychoactive Psilocybe were found in North America, Europe and Asia. Many books have been published detailing how to cultivate them. The ease with which Magic Mushrooms can be found or grown makes them the most widely used of the hallucinogenic drugs.

Magic Mushrooms are not addictive. The first danger with them is mistakenly picking poisonous wild mushrooms that look very similar. This can be a potential fatal mistake so much care must be taken if picking any fungi in the wild. Magic Mushrooms themselves are not toxic and the CDC rates them lower than aspirin. When Magic Mushrooms are eaten they are broken down and produce psilocin which cause the hallucinogenic effects. The effects of psilocin varies between circumstance the drugs is taken and the person taking it but includes mind altering effects that can last between 3 to 8 hours depending on the does taken and the form taken.

Side effects of taking magic mushrooms include increased heart rate, mouth numbness, nausea, high blood pressure, muscle relaxation, yawning, loss of appetite, limb weakness and pupil dilation.

When psilocin is in the body the mind altering effects include noticeable change to the visual, tactile and audio senses. Many experience enhancements in perception and visions of colours and other strange light phenomena like halos or trailers (from fingers). Solid objects maybe seen to rippler, breather or shimmer, they can seem to melt into their environment. Sound is heard with great clarity and depth and some even visualise sound with colour.

Mushrooms effects whilst not generally as strong are similar to other psychedelics like LSD. The sensory "trip" of the effect are dependant on the environment of the user, if you feel uncomfortable or unsafe your will have a negative and perhaps scary experience, where as being with close trusted friends in a location your are used to will generally mean you have a positive experience. Many users experiences spiritually important moments whilst using magic mushrooms.

Dosage of mushrooms containing psilocybin depends on the potency of the mushroom (the total psilocybin and psilocin content of the mushrooms), which varies significantly both between species and within the same species, but is typically around 0.5-2% of the dried weight of the mushroom. A typical dose of the rather common species, Psilocybe cubensis, is approximately 1 to 2.5 grams, while about 2.5 to 5 grams dried mushroom material is considered a strong dose. Above 5 dried grams is often considered a heavy dose.

Magic Mushrooms in their fresh form still remain legal in some countries including Spain and Austria. On November 29, 2008, The Netherlands announced it would ban the cultivation and use of psilocybin-containing fungi beginning December 1, 2008.

The UK ban introduced in 2005 came under much criticism, however was rushed through at the end of the 2001-2005 Parliament. Before 2005 Magic Mushrooms were sold in hundreds of shops and on internet web sites throughout the UK. In dried or processed form the magic mushrooms are a banned substance.

Magic Mushrooms are usually just eaten fresh or dried or can be brewed into a drink and drunk like tea
