Tobacco Tobacco comes from the leaves of the tobacco plant which originates in the Americas and was first brought to Europe by Christopher Columbus. Tobacco contains a drug called nicotine which is highly addictive. It's nicotine that gives smokers their 'hit'.

Smoking any drug gets it to the brain quickly. When a smoker inhales, the nicotine reaches the brain in around 8 seconds. Regular smokers say it helps them relax and feel less hungry.
Nicotine is a highly addictive drug. Smokers often can get hooked very quickly. It can take many years and a great deal of will power to get of the habit. It is hard to remain an occasional smoker and the quantity people smoke often increases.
Tobacco has various effects including the speeding up of the heart rate and raising of the bodies blood pressure. Smoking increases the chance of getting coughs and chest infections are subsequently worse than in non smokers.
Long term use can have serious health effects including asthma, cancer and heart disease.
Besides smoking tobacco it can also be taken in the form of snuff which is inhaled or as a chewing tobacco. Both have there own health problems in addition to that caused by smoking.
A typical 20 a day smoker will spend over £8000 over 5 years on the habit.
Tobacco is legal in the UK and can be bought by anyone over the age of 18.
