Back to Basics Profile

23/11/91 The first ever Back to Basics is held at The Music Factory. Leeds. Originally intended by partners Dave Beer and Alistair Cooke to be a small club where their mates could go and let their hair down as a kickback to the jaded acid house scene, it rapidly became a hugely popular night with massive amounts of people wanting to come in having heard its reputation as the best (and wildest) night out for miles around. Due to its success it moved from one to two to three floors.

1992 Proving that acid house really did bring people together, Dave and Vicki meet and have been inseparable ever since.

1992 BacktoBasics wins the inaugural Mixmag DMC club of the year Award.

12/03/93 In a terrible blow to the club, a car accident tragically kills Ali and Ralph Lawson¹s girlfriend Jocelyn. Dave is injured also. The dance world rallies round to support Dave & Back to Basics at this time.

15/08/93 The Mad Pyjama Ball is held at Holmpierre Pont, Nottingham in memory of Ali and Jos.

10/09/94 Back to Basics moves to The Pleasure Rooms. Here we set up home and continued pushing the boundaries and causing mayhem, bringing in new talent and covering all styles of house - now household names such as Derrick Carter, Josh Wink, Danny Tenaglia, and DJ Sneak are brought over.

07/09/96 Cut The Crap opens at The Foundry, Coventry, spreading Basics¹ quality parties to another part of the country. Cut The Crap is a term born in Back to Basics - a no-nonsense way of partying and getting on with it (which often ends in nonsense!)

1996 Cut The Crap, The Album, is released as a reaction to all the shit money grabbing commercial compilations which seem to have flooded the house scene. In the words of the Ronseal ads , it does exactly what it says on the tin. Featuring mixes by Ralph Lawson, Derrick Carter and Andrew Wetherall it gets listed by DJ Magazine 38th out of 100 in The Best Dance Compilations Ever.

14/06/97 The Pleasure Rooms shuts down, leaving Back to Basics without a venue.

18/10/97 Dave and Vicki get married in Las Vegas.

25/10/97 B2B starts BackBeat at Think Tank. This was a break from our house tradition - as the name suggests it was a big beat night, featuring bands such as Bentley Rhythm Ace and The Dub Pistols, and DJs such as David Holmes, Justin Robertson, Derrick Dahlarge, and of course, Dave Beer. This night gave Dave the chance to develop his own DJing and experiment in different areas of dance music.

23/05/98 Basics is launched with a pure four to the floor house vibe. Derrick Carter is the guest and here opens another chapter in the Basics saga. This night, hosted by Dave and Vicki in the intimate and plush surroundings of the purpose-designed Mint Club, immediately proved a great success with both clubbers and journalists alike - hundreds of hopeful clubbers are turned away from the packed club each week and Basics is consistently featured and praised in industry magazines such as Ministry, Muzik, Mixmag, Jockey Slut, and even Select.

01/10/98 Basics wins The Ericsson/Muzik Magazine Award for Best Small Club. Yippee!

21/11/98 Back to Basics celebrates its 7th Anniversary

31/12/98 Basics brings in the New Year with a Space 1999 party - the countdown to 2000 begins. 1998 had seen a barrage of the world¹s best and most upfront DJs visit the club. Highlights had included Sasha playing house to a riotous Basics crowd; Doc Martin playing one of his last UK gigs before illness struck - an awe-inspiring set, get well soon Doc; the return of our much-loved ex-resident Huggy, back from his adopted home of Florida to remind us what we were missing; the introduction of a new talent - Fred Everything, now a firm favourite with the Basics regulars; the first of many appearances from Danny Rampling at Basics @ The Mint Club, now a favourite gig for both him.

29/10/99 Basics organise a coach to take Leeds clubbers to our London residency at Home. 64 people go down, 61 come back - not a bad result! The Basics staff even make it into work after the five hour coach journey back!

27/11/99 Basics brings an old friend back to help celebrate their 8th birthday - Mr Derrick Carter.

31/12/99 Basics brings in the new millennium in style with Satoshi Tomiie and Bobby D'Ambrosio from Def Mix, and the return of riotous ex-resident Huggy from Florida, all playing in the main room, plus James Holroyd, Dave Beer and the Barkin boys playing club classics in the garden - not forgetting our dramatic midnight firework display!

Highlights of 1999 included some geezers called Basement Jaxx sending the club into a carnival-style frenzy; a fantastic night with Sneak and Steve Lawler both guesting; another great double trouble night with Lottie and Lord G both playing excellent sets; a visit from The Don, DJ Pierre, who jacked it old-style but with a fresh new twist; the wonderful Derrick Carter playing about an hour and a half over his alotted time and the crowd still screaming for more when he stopped; John Digweed playing a truly great deep Twilo-style set which left them begging him to come back again soon; Danny Rampling dancing behind the decks while the previous DJ Phat Phil Cooper pogoed in front;top sets from Swag, Ashley Beedle, Satoshi Tomiie, Justin Robertson, the Slam boys, Pure Science, Dope Smugglaz, Fred Everything, Cricco Castelli, Harvey........

It is a resounding success despite the weather, with great sets from Junior Sanchez, Romanthony, Danny Rampling, Jon Carter and residents Ralph Lawson and James Holroyd among others. Dave Beer plays a fantastic set in the VIP tent and is subsequently asked by Radio 1 to appear on their float for Love Parade.

03/06/00 Basics host a tent at the Vodkafields festival just outside Leeds, a Homelands/Creamfields-style festival aimed solely at students.

08/07/00 Basics @ The Mint Club is the official VIP hosts for the Leeds Love Parade. Basics has a float in the Parade featuring David Morales, Tim Sheridan, Jon Carter, Dave Beer, Basics residents Ralph Lawson & James Holroyd, plus Paul Woolford & Tristan Da Cunha. The official Radio 1 VIP Basics afterparty @ Mint features David Morales and the Basics residents in the main room (The Mint), with North Bar opened as the VIP room with music from the Dope Smugglaz, Tim Sheridan, Paul Woolford, & Tristan Da Cunha. Dave Beer is the official ambassador, and also plays on the Radio 1 float.

August 2000 Basics officially take on up-and-coming djs Paul Woolford and Tristan de Cunha as additional residents.

20/08/00 Basics guests at the Home night @ Space, Ibiza. DJs include Danny Tenaglia, Steve Lawler, Romanthony and our very own Ralph Lawson. About 20 Leeds regulars are there, having flown over for the party and of course it is our very own Ralph Lawson who get's the terrace jackin!!!

27/8/00 Back to Basics in conjunction with Stereo and Hard Times present Masters at Work @ Majestyk. This is the first time that three premier clubs have joined together for an event, and it is broadcast live on the Galaxy network. At the after party at the Soul Kitchen, Louie Vega, declares he wants to return to Leeds but to play in a more intimate club???

2+3/9/00 One of the funniest weekends in a long time has Yousef playing Basics on Saturday followed by a ridiculous afterparty @ Fudge Bar on Sunday which goes on until Monday morning. Spinning are Yousef, Dave Beer, Paul Woolford, Tristan da Cunha, Mat Playford & Ben Brophy. The bar is temporarily transformed into the world's smallest club with much silliness, especially from the bardivers. Unfortunately there is video footage.

7/10/00 Back to Basics launches Tales of Glamour and Excess, its new bimonthly residency taking over all 4 floors of Home, London. Guest djs include Timo Maas, Lottie, Howard Marks, Tim Sheridan (Dope Smugglaz) and Mark Moore. One floor of the club is transformed into a fetish room

21/10/00 Little Louie Vega plays The Mint Club in an historical night that sees the masses of Leeds go absolutely bannanas to a booth that is fully armed with CD players, DAT players a Pioneer 500 EFX Unit and a monster Vestax Mixer and Crossover unit. The ceiling is left dripping. But the party continues at the Soul Kitchen!!!

25+26/11/00 Back to Basics celebrates its ninth birthday with a fantastic double-header weekend-long party in traditional Basics fashion.

Saturday 25th sees Part 1 @ The Mint Club with special guest DJ Sneak, plus Basics residents Ralph & James in the main room and Paul, Tristan and a cameo from Beery in the garden. Part 1, sees the whole club transformed into a white palace with everyone dressed in white to boot!!! Sunday 26th November brings Part 2 @ Majestyk- with very special guest the one and only Fatboy Slim, Norman Cook, supported by special guest Jon Carter. In the Majetstyk, hangs a 9 metre tall balloon in the shape of a nine. The highlight being a mass firing of confetti that blows over, on to the decks and makes the record jump.

November & December 2000 -Back to Basics tour all over the UK, with gigs in Belfast, Cardiff, London, Glasgow, Manchester, Nottingham & Liverpool to name a few ( Check Events for full listings). The tour is fully supported by our Sponsors Dobedo and is the first one for over 5 years. The feedback from the nights strengthens the aim for a world tour.

Essentially, plans for a world tour are on the horizons. These will follow on from the release our Tenth Anniversary Album which will hopefully be mixed by DJ Sneak!!!
