Colours @ The Arches

Scotland’s top Easter gig spilled out onto the streets of Glasgow – literally!

Five delirious hours of Sasha and John Digweed just weren’t enough. No one wanted the night to end. When the Arches Theatre finally closed its doors, a saviour in a pick up truck cranked up a massive sound system. Hundreds of revelers danced on from every available platform, including car bonnets, for another half an hour before the boys in blue brought the impromptu street to an end.

It came as no surprise then, when Sasha and Digweed both described Colours Easter Sunday bash as the best event they had EVER played in Scotland. The Sunday night rolled on and on until the lads finally boarded a plane home on Tuesday, after ordering decks to be delivered to their posh hotel, kicking off a top party there where, the select die-hard guest downed over £1500 of booze. The duo’s Northern Exposure experience with Colours was a sell-out.

1500 people rammed the ideal venue for the hell raising heavenly event. Colours own residents, Jon Mancini, Boney and Crosby kicked off in Arch One, dropping a sweet succession of top tracks to wet the appetite. The lads work well together without losing their individualism, perhaps that’s the reason why Colours fortnightly club in Edinburgh, has such a strong foothold in the Scottish club scene. However, tonight the clubbers parted with £16 of hard earned cash to see Sasha and Digweed in action in Arch Two.

Disco disciples packed the place as the top two jocks served up a feast of spiritually uplifting tunes, testament to their almost demi-God status. The otherwise quiet Glasgow side street was rocked to its roots. “What about that for a party?”, asked Colours promoter Ricky Magowan. The crowd response more than answered the rhetorical question. Ricky and his life long mate James Mckay have shaped the club scene north of the border for the past seven years.

Originally under the guise of Streetrave, they brought their ambitions to life, the name becoming as familiar as Back To Basics or Renaissance south of the border. From humble beginnings in Ayr Pavillion, a quiet seaside venue more used to Western tea dances, Streetrave really took off – again literally – with their massive and now legendary Eurodance events at Prestwick Airport. A plane load of Japanese tourists once descended on the airport while stressed security staff were still trying to clear party animals from the terminal. As time and music progressed, Ricky and Jim ditched the Streetrave name and image in favour of the more mature, musically success Colours. Under this banner they’ve now been putting the class into classic clubbing up here for over twelve months, commanding packed nights in both Glasgow and Edinburgh.

“The Colours concept is all about taking Scottish clubbing forward”, says Ricky. “It was a gamble to drop the Streetrave name because it was so strong and instantly recognizable, but the time was right for a change”. Already Colours is held in high regard by all the top name DJs – more than 50 British and international guests have graced their decks in the past year.

What’s more, the lads are always looking to go one better. There’s barely time to recover from Easter at the Arches before Colours go ‘Live in the Capital’, at Edinburgh’s Royal Highland Centre on 11th May. It’s a tall order for any club promoter to fill a 5000 capacity venue. Then again, perhaps not when you consider Sasha and Digweed are heading back for the event along with Carl Cox, Pete Tong, Boney and Jon Mancini, with a live performance from BT. One to watch …
