GoodtimesGood Times was first conceived back in 1999 by a group of friends who were unhappy with the state of the old skool club scene as it was then, and the severe lack of quality nights & events in the north that were playing the musical sounds they craved so much; (old skool & uplifting piano classics 1990 - 1996) | | More Info |
Their passion for this music had come from frequenting LIFE @ Bowlers, which, as it was back then, was the UK's biggest and most famous legal weekly old skool warehouse rave situated in Trafford park, Manchester. Here 1000's of like-minded ravers would unite week in week out from 8pm to 2am & party together to the sound of old skool piano house spread over 3 huge indoor arenas, many of these nights were complete with funfair ride and bouncy castles.
When this Night eventually closed its doors for the last time in 1998, it left a void in the northern club scene with no other nights playing the same styles and variation of old skool piano house that the fledgling GoodTimes team and so many others out there loved so much, so the 4 friends thought it was time for something to be done about this, and they decided to take on the challenge and start up there own old skool night, one which had the qualities that they felt were missing from so many others..... And so GoodTimes was born
Saturday September 4th 1999, saw The launch night of GoodTimes @ Beyond Beach Babylon in Huddersfield, a venue which was named by MixMag as one of the best looking clubs in the UK in 1996 and was hugely popular with the local crowds and further a field due to its uniqueness to other venues. The night was headlined by none other than the legendary life @ Bowlers scratch master himself . . . DJ Nipper
This night was a HUGE success with over 330 people attending and partying, (a large proportion being the old Life @ Bowlers crew showing that GoodTimes had tapped into that missing vibe & attracted the right vibed-crew) most of who didn't want to leave by the time the last tune of the night was played!! The atmosphere and vibe inside on the night was electric, something many people had not experienced for quite some time especially in an old skool house night & this success carried on with the attendances growing as every event passed. Word was now spreading that there was a new old skool night on the scene, a night that had a something extra that set them apart from all the others club events out there.
On Boxing Day of 1999 GoodTimes held a special Christmas party to finish there year off with a bang, this event welcomed over 550 party people through the doors and was GoodTimes biggest night up to that point. Unfortunately bad news was soon to follow this high for GoodTimes as due to financial problems their home venue was to close and with no other local venues available or suitable for them the future of GoodTimes looked at risk.
However the promoters did not let this deter them and they refused to just give up, as they knew from feedback about the events they'd put on they were onto a good thing and knew one day they could make an impact on the oldskool scene with their night and future ideas. So they decided to find a new venue/s no matter were they were and continue promoting their old skool night so the GoodTimes name and the vibe that was represented would carry on.
This lead to GoodTimes having to leave Yorkshire and hold nights in both Blackburn @ Monroe's, and Wigan @ The Cricketers. All nights GoodTimes promoted at these venues were all night affairs going right from 9pm all the way thro to 9am!!! One of these events was GoodTimes 1st ever birthday party, Although all the nights were all successes, GoodTimes felt the set up involved in promoting nights at these sort of venues was not what was wanted for the GoodTimes team and more importantly its clubbers - a new permanent venue was needed, and so the search continued. .
At the start of 2001 after months of looking a venue was finally found - this time much closer to home and much more suitable to the needs of Good Times (one being normal opening hours!!!). This venue was the Famous "Afterdark club" which was situated in Morley Town centre near Leeds. This venue was home to the internationally known Orbit techno nights or over 10 years and GoodTimes spent over 2 years at this venue staging monthly events and carrying on establishing their reputation as one of the main old skool events of the north which was by now in to its 2nd year.
By the end of 2001 other promoters had now started to ask GoodTimes to bring their night and DJs to various venues to co-host events and back rooms at their venues. This included places such as Wakefield, Manchester and more locally in Huddersfield @ The Old Cornmill in Brighouse (which is where GoodTimes has held its biggest and most successful event in their history…(so far!!) This event was The Life @ Bowlers reunion night, an event held in memory by the GoodTimes promoters to remember and celebrate this legendary event, and everything that went with it: the DJs, the tunes, the untouchable atmosphere, the happy smiley faces, not a bad vibe in sight (a true old skool rave in every way), and as the flyers from there used to say, " best days of your life"
This event was spread over 4 separate arenas (one being outdoor) and with each room playing a different style of music, from old skool house & hardcore through to the more classic Italian piano sounds and the harder edged house. This night blew every bodies expectations none more so than the promoters, with over 1400 people turning up on the night, from all sides of country (even as far as Scotland) - people were still queuing to get in all the way down through the car park on to the main road below at 11.30pm!!! The event was even complete with a gyroscope in the outdoor arena for that life added touch!! This was a major turning point for GoodTimes as the success of this event firmly established them as serious promoters in the old skool scene, but even more importantly than that helped spread the name of GoodTimes as a name even further a field than ever before.
The start of 2003 was to see another major change for GoodTimes as they now felt in order the further themselves even more and continue growing GoodTimes needed to leave its home @ the Afterdark in Leeds and find a venue much closer to their original home. It was in the summer of 2003 that GoodTimes were to be brought the best news they'd had since leaving Huddersfield back in 1999 - this was that their old home Beyond beach Babylon, which had now been renamed Rhythms in indigo, was to reopen!!! Within weeks GoodTimes were contacted and asked back to hold their events there, so finally after 4 years of staging old skool events at various venues around the north GoodTimes was Finally Home
The 4th birthday party in September 2003 saw GoodTimes break all previous attendance records for the club since it first opened (over 700 party people present), with over 400 advance tickets being sold before the night, and many being locked out by 12.00am as the club was already full to capacity!!!!
GoodTimes success gradually continued all throughout 2004, and has saw them being repeat-booked for versus nights against other old skool nights (these being mainly all in the Manchester area). The 5th birthday party has been the highlight of 2004 for Good Times so far, a night which was very special to them and so many of the clubbers that have followed them from day one. The main reasons for this being that this birthday night fell exactly 5 years to the very day GoodTimes first started (Saturday Sept 4th 1999) and back now at the very same venue
The night was in many peoples eyes the most impressive GoodTimes event that has taken place at that venue to date, with huge rave standard lighting rigs being brought in specially for the event to transform the whole look of the venue for that one night. Also the hugely popular Dream Frequency made a special on stage PA appearance to perform a handful of their greatest hits. DJ Nipper also headlined the event , this was his first appearance back in the UK since 1999 , GoodTimes were the 1st club to pull the legend out of retirement and flew him back from shanghai , china just for the event !! This was extra special as he was the main DJ that featured at the very first GoodTimes event back in 1999, This was a night that will stand out in many peoples memories as one of the best GoodTimes so far, the year of 2004 finished on a huge high for GoodTimes with several more successive events leading right up to the boxing day night special which was there last event of the year.
2005 started for GoodTimes with both good and bad, as they felt one of the things that was needed for the night was a new club website, to help further the GoodTimes name and to let more people know more information about them and there old skool events, so one was built and a small Website launch party was arranged for Jan 17th 2005, Unfortunately two weeks before the date of the night GoodTimes was informed that there spell of hosting nights at there venue was to come to an end as the building was to shut down once again , but unfortunately for good this time.
So word was passed around in the hope that as many people as possible would find out at such short notice, that this was sadly to be the last GoodTimes at this legendary venue, The normal admission fee was scrapped by GoodTimes and free entrance was given to all that knew about it, So GoodTimes in there own way could say thank you to all the people that had supported them and made there nights for the past 2 years there so special & memorable to so many.
To the surprise of the promoters over 500 up for it clubbers turned up through out the night, many of these being within the 1st two hours, which for a night with no official flyers released and just word of mouth alone is an impressive feat to say the least, and proved that GoodTimes nights at this venue would be missed by many.
When the clock struck 3am and closing time arrived the dance floor was rammed from wall to wall and not one single person in the building didn't have there hands in the air and a big smile on there face, the atmosphere inside was absolutely electric, with the cheers, clapping and whistles and calls for one more tune!!! So GoodTimes ignored the time to close and played on till 3.20am and sent the venue off in true GoodTimes style!!!
This was to be the end of one era for GoodTimes, as this venue was the original place were they was first born in 1999 and then later returned in 2002 and stayed right up till the beginning of 2005 and had played a major part behind the constant success and high standard of nights over the last 2 years, and gaining a title as one of the north's longest running 100% REAL old skool uplifting piano classics event
So back to Huddersfield it was , to a smaller venue just up the road from were they originally came from , this venue was Fabrik , which only held 350 people , the opening event came with huge anticipation from the people of Huddersfield as it was long overdue , as the Huddersfield club scene had sorely missed its best and longest running event since it was forced to leave in 2005 , the opening night was yet another huge success for the GT crew , with the club being full from wall to wall and the doors closed within one and a half hours , proving once again how popular GoodTimes was back in its home town.
But unfortunately more bad news was to come as the venue closed shortly after a few events as the owner wanted to sell up and move on , which left GoodTimes once again with no perm home to call there own and no venues available in Huddersfield. So, on their travels GoodTimes went again this time To Wakefield @ the Kube club , this was a multi room event and although the nights were successful GoodTimes wasn’t happy with the whole set up and the club didn’t feel like a proper GoodTimes , So after 7 events it was decided there would be no more at this venue till a suitable one could be found .
2006 was a busy and massive year for GoodTimes as they were asked by two of the biggest promoters in the north of England , the mighty “Vibealite” , to host there old skool rooms at the massive 4 room venue , club mission in Leeds every single month , and then at club north in Manchester , with the success of these events GoodTimes was also asked by Manchester legends “Totally lost it” to host there upstairs room @ the phoenix every month . This then also led to GoodTimes being asked to come back to Manchester once again to finish there year off with a bang and co host the old skool room at the massive compulsion / missing warehouse rave at the boddingtons factory which held 3500 ppl over two seperate warehouses .This was another landmark event for GoodTimes , as they were now recognised along side the already long time established big promoters of the oldskool dance scene.
2007 saw GoodTimes back in Huddersfield for a few small events @ bar mocha which had just re opened from being fabrik, all these events were sell outs and the doors shut by 11pm , despite this the long time promoter had noticed a decline in the oldskool scene some what and decided it was time to take a well deserved break , as 8 years straight was something any event / promoter would be proud of . the things GoodTimes had achieved had left its mark on the oldskool scene and would be talked about as a legendary oldskool club for many a year to come.
2009 saw a massive rise in the popularity of oldskool and the scene was getting back on its feet with more and more oldskool nights and reunions popping up all over the place and doing well . The demand for GoodTimes to return once again was becoming bigger and bigger , as they had been sorely missed for those that have followed for many a year . A decision was made and it was confirmed GoodTimes would return for a one off Reunion special @ the Camel club , a venue which is easily the best in Huddersfield and one that has a special feel to the place so different from other venues , this was also a venue which GoodTimes had always felt would be good for there type of event for many a year , but it was never available , at last after all these years they got the venue they had fallen in love with all them years ago .
September 12th saw the return of GoodTimes back in its hometown once again and the response was nothing short of awesome after being away from the scene for well over a year , the night started at 9pm and within one hour 150 ppl had entered the club , and the atmosphere growing by the minute , by 1 o'clock the club was rammed and the night a huge success with 700 turning up and partying in true GoodTimes style !! proving yet again that GoodTimes was a night followed and loved by many . After the success of the night there was a massive call for the event to return for good so GoodTimes thought hard and long and decided to bring back there events but every 3 months instead of every month . . the next chapter in this story is being written as we speak !!!!
Here's to more many more GoodTimes ahead !!!
Thank you all so much !!! with out you lot all the above would not have been possible !!!!
