Tomorrow World - Venue 44 - Review

Venue 44, Mansfield 1995

After a leisurely Friday evening cruise along various motorways, we arrived at Venue 44 (Mansfield) nice and early. Outside gathered an eager crowd of Technoheads awaiting nine hours of blissful tunes. Everybody was pleased at 10pm when the doors opened for a night of pure Hardcore.

Entry was quick and efficient, although Venue 44 is a members club only, so if you have no membership (which is free), it will take you slightly longer to get in. It’s simply a matter of name and address etc. So once inside, it’s through the metal detector, a brief search and in you jolly well go.

Depositing your bits and bobs in the cloakroom costs £1 for coats and a whopping £3 (ouch!) for bags, what a stinger! This apparently is under review by the management. Should hope so too.

Everyone was kept in the downstairs arena until 11pm whilst the finishing touches were completed in the main arena. It was well worth the wait. At 11pm everyone shot upstairs to be greeted by an awesome array of visual stimulation. UV-aroma, the whole room seemed to be glowing, the theme seemed to be based around a brain, split up into bits and connected together by mad silver piping. Wicked! A crazy alien with springy legs looked like he was surfing down a beam.

The stage was completely transformed, two huge projection screens at either side with live video mixing by Delta Video.

To top all this was the multi-coloured laser, which beams out from the stage into the crowd and literally blows your head off. Very effective indeed. All the production is in house. Kraft Promotions making all their own décor and what a damn fine job they do.

Ratty was first to grace the decks not someone you would immediately think of with regards to Techno. We were pleasantly surprised when be banged out a top set. Ade finding himself rocking it on the huge dance platform set in the centre of the room. (Not something he was expecting to do when Ratty was on). Respect Ratty!

Time to check the chill out. This is a new room for Venue 44, and a welcome addition it is too. The walls are painted with five UV pictures of a very trippy nature. Also for your pleasure is a pool table (if you can see straight) and a pinball machine. Luckily we went to dance so there was no time to spend on these present day entertainment sources. We had come to experience a different world....(no, not Waynes World)....Tomorrow’s World!  Back to the Hardcore.

Due to the double booking of the advertised Scott Brown, Mark Smith (Rez etc) had been drafted in to replace him. Full refunds were offered to whoever required them, nice touch. For anyone who took up the offer, bad move. Mark Smith played a wicked hour of hard stomping tunes. By now absolutely everyone in the main room was rocking to the max.

Panic (cool name), was up next for yet more frantic sounds from the underground. This night is most definitely only for the headstrong Techno nutter. A category which we most definitely fall into.

Slippery when wet! This could just be me, but I found the floor was rather slippy, nearly went over apex a few times. For those who commented on my ace dancing, I was only trying to stay upright!!

Other sets during the course of this Techno extravaganza came from Lars and Fergus (a regular at Krafty events). Mr Mikey ‘B’ also graced us with even more Techno! Last, but by no means least, the cool, the talented, the long haired BRISK! A man well endowed in the Techno department. Easily taking the converted Golden Stylus Award for ‘Fuck Me. That’s Hard Techno’.

A small point: Here follows the Bri & Ade definition of ‘What Is Techno’.

Repetitive beats (the faster the better) with experimental sounds, samples etc. Eg: Clarkee, HMS, Brisk, Daz Sound and anyone who’s played at Rezerection. If it makes you dance your bollocks off, sweat profusely, lose your marbles and then collapse in a gibbering heap, you can then safely call it Techno. The point being everyone’s idea of Techno is going to be different. Let’s not segregate any further. You have the flyers you know who you like. Enjoy. Variety, as they say, is the spice of life!

Tomorrow’s World is for those who enjoy Techno to dance to. So don’t pussy foot around, get your arse down there and rock to the max. Out of space now, gotta fly. Respects to Gary, thanks for the tour and an exceptional nights See ya soon.
