Scotland - Dance Music scene

Scotland is very much its own country where it come to the music it likes and this is very true with dance music.  When the rave scene developed Scotland chose a harder sound than down south in England which developed into its own hardcore / bouncy techno scene.  Much of the influence for this came from the Dutch Gabba/Hardcore and many DJs from their played at big Scottish events.

As this scene developed the musically talented local producer filled the gap and many local record companies sprang up and with a captive scene these thrived.   Labels like Evolution, Limbo, 23rd Precinct, Notorious Vinyl & Debunk music. These were owned by the talented DJ/producers like Scott Brown, Tom Wilson, Mallorca Lee and Marc Smith.  Many of who formed their own PA's to promote the tunes and labels they were producing them under and performed at big events and clubs in Scotland and still do  today.  Acts like Q-tex and Ultrasonic.

The Scottish scene was also supported by its own dance dedicated magazine like M8 & Clubscene.

In 1993 Fantazia gave Scotland one of its first appearances from an English promoter, carefully merging the best of the English DJs like Carl Cox, Seduction and Ellis Dee with the local harder sounding talent like Mikey B and Bass Generator and the live PAs Q-Tex and Ultrasonic these sellout 12,000 event was a great success at the SECC in Glasgow.

The other notable large rave company to do events in Scotland was Rezerection, it  was original from the NE of England but mainly held events in Scotland at the Royal Highland Centre, a large warehouse style venue outside of Edinburgh.  These events were a great success from around 1992 to 1997.

There followed a number of years where the hardcore scene faded away and was replaced by the likes of Colours (original Street Rave) who held their very popular Coloursfest in Glasgow annually featuring top worldwide House music DJs like Paul Oakenfold, Sasha, John Digweed etc.

In 2006 Fantazia once again returned to Scotland to a sell out series of gigs at  the amazing Braehead Complex in Glasgow and the Royal Highland Centre in Edinburgh.  These 8000 people parties became a firm 2 to 3 times a year favourite with a new generation of ravers.  The parties ended in 2010 with the impact of the recession and due to local authority actions (without cause) that piled huge Police financial costs onto Fantazia, going from nothing to £40,000 per event over the 4 years of holding them.
