Diane Morgan has paid a heartfelt tribute to long-time collaborator Ricky Gervais, revealing she would do “anything” for the comedian ahead of the launch of their upcoming Netflix project. The 50-year-old actress and comedian is set to reunite with Mr Gervais following her celebrated performance in his hit comedy-drama series After Life.
Speaking about her admiration for the BAFTA-winning writer and director, Ms Morgan admitted that her professional loyalty to the star knows no bounds. “If Ricky asked me to do anything, obviously I’d do it,” says Diane Morgan, actress and comedian. “I would have made sandwiches, to be honest,” she added, describing it as an “honour” to watch the creator at work.
A star-studded reunion for Netflix’s Alley Cats
The duo are teaming up for Alley Cats, a brand-new adult animated series commissioned by Netflix. The six-part comedy, featuring 15-minute episodes, follows a band of foul-mouthed feral felines navigating British society while searching for companionship and reflecting on the absurdities of modern life.
The 65-year-old comedian, best known for co-creating classic British comedies The Office, Extras, and Life’s Too Short alongside Stephen Merchant, has assembled much of his previous ensemble for the project. Joining Mr Gervais and Ms Morgan in voicing the profanity-laden characters are Jo Hartley, Tom Basden, David Earl, Kerry Godliman, Andrew Brooke, and Natalie Cassidy.
Dark satire behind a cute animated facade
In Alley Cats, Ms Morgan voices a character named Olive, whom she humorously describes as “an idiot” and Mr Gervais’s half-sister on screen. Her character is known for delivering sharp, cutting one-liners before abruptly vanishing from scenes.
Despite the innocent visual aesthetic of the series, Ms Morgan warned audiences not to expect wholesome family viewing. “I know you see the cats and you think, ‘Oh, aren’t they cute and lovely?’ And they have these little adventures, and then they just open their mouths,” she cautioned regarding the show’s dark humor and explicit tone.
