DJ DNA

The Essential Platinum label has 5 members in total, Dougal, Hixxy, DJ DNA, Breeze and Mickey Skeedal. 6 years ago a young lad by the name of Morgan heard ‘rave’ music for the first time. Within a year he was attending the parties and found himself becoming more and more interested in what the DJ was actually doing behind the decks and what was done to produce the music he and many other were dancing to. Little did he realise that this interest would lead him to bigger and better things....the birth of DJ DNA.

Now we know how he got involved in the scene let find out how much the scene means to him....Do you see it as something you just make a living out of or is it as something you just makes a living out of or is it a part of your life that you can’t be without? “The scene is really important to me, not because it buys my meals so much, more because I’ve always wanted to be a part of it. If I wasn’t in the Hardcore scene I'd have to be doing something in a similar scene”. He admitted that last year the scene had him worried “For a while every one was playing the same records sometimes in the same order, it is getting a bit better now, but we need more individuality in the raves and the nights also need to be broken up with different styles of music a bit more”. Well Billy Bunter has introduced a new styles of music that seems to be going down well, but what do you think of the way he’s gone? “I think he’s got huge guts (and before someone jumps to the wrong conclusion and prints another personal attack on me, that’s not a cheap gag). By sticking his neck out like that he risked everything but now it's starting to pay off ‘cos he's getting the respect he deserves. Personally I wouldn’t have the balls to do it - fair play monsieur Bunter!”

So how stable do you think the scene is? “I don’t know. I just hope that someone in the government sees what damage shutting down a whole culture could do...here come the acid parties in a dirty cold warehouse”. So if the scene dies tomorrow what would you do? “I’d probably carry on working with Dougal in another scene. Whatever I do I’d have to be involved in music somehow”.

With the name DNA appearing on flyers and also record sleeves across the country I wanted to know whether he considered himself to be DJ or a producer....”At the moment I;m more of a producer than a DJ but hopefully this is all going to start changing, My DJ booking s are picking , but only because I have tunes out. These days you have to be both in equal measure to get anywhere”. But if you had to give one up which would you choose? “Errrrrrrmmm I’d probably give up the DJing because it’s more fun making a tune knowing that people are going to go nuts to it”, When I asked him when he how he first got into producing he replied “I can’t remember how, but a few years ago I got hold of Slipmatt’s number and asked him if he could help me to make a tune. God knows why but he helped me and put me in touch with a studio engineer (he's gone on to become D’Zyne) while starting the tune, the computer started to smoke. We abandoned the day, and D’Zyne put me in touch with a guy called Ola from Just Another Label. After a few talks I made my first tune there”. But was his first tune his first idea? “No my first idea went nowhere - thank god! They were complete crap”. His first tune was called ‘Reality’ which he obviously agonised over as it took him a phenomenal 3 days to complete (must have had flu!?!) and was released on to a promo record for an album! “Some say the word I wrote are about drugs, closer friends think it’s about my life, but I’m keeping quiet about both!. The words were were, “Is this dream gonna last for eternity? Is this love that will never die? I don’t wanna return to reality, there’s no place to go that’s higher than high”.

Sound’s as though you’ve written about my life mate!! But how well did it do? “Well the promo record did quite well, but I don;t know if that was because of my record or one of the other three”. Oh come on DNA don’t be so modest, sod the others, take full credit I would!! With numerous releases under his belt I wondered (being the nosy kind of girl I am) which one had one the best and which one was his personal favourite. “I don’t know! I haven't always found out sale figures on my tunes.” (Hang on - stop.... this just will not do, how are you supposed to brad if you don’t have any figures to back you up?) “I reckon it’s got to be either ‘Go Insane’, ‘Dance With Somebody’, ‘Hornz (with Dougal) or, the way things are going the ‘Really Love You’ remix, but my personal favourite is ‘Sometimes’, a track that he expected to do well but didn’t was the ‘So in Love’ remix for Seduction, come on then....Why? The answer he have knocked all my hopes of gossip out of the window “It never got released” (boring, try again!) Well why wasn’t it released then? Unfortunately he wasn’t prepared to share this information, it didn’t matter what I offered he still refused..........So now that I had totally degraded myself and was feeling ashamed. I moved swiftly on to the next question (the lengths I go to, to try and bring you lot gossip).

Where do your ideas for tracks come from? “I haven't got a clue! Sometimes it’s something I’ve heard in the charts or something I’ve seen on the telly. It varies. Also the way I make music depends on the way I’m feeling on that particular day. If I’m really happy, it’s sunny and Dougal's taking me out on his jet ski later, I’ll probably come up with something really jolly. If it’s pissing down outside and all I’ve got to look forward to is cooking dinner, I’ll turn out some really weird, messed up junk, (are you talking about your track or your cooking there?). Thankfully the tunes I love making seem to sell really well, so I don’t really have to worry about the sales side of things (you see - you can be a bit big headed when you try).

When I asked him how he got involved in Essential Platinum he gave me two answers, and I am a total loss as to which one is the correct answer (if you can work it out let me know) 1: “I’d worked with Dougal in the past on various records and we seemed to work well together, so eventually he asked if I wanted to come and work with him”. 2: “I was abducted by raving aliens who told me that if i didn’t work for him, they’d melt by brain”. Now can you see the problem? (this bloke gets stranger by the minute!!) So what does he actually do? I’m one of the studio engineers along side Mickey Skeedle. So apart from producing my own tracks, I work all the equipment in the studio so other people can make theirs. Essential Platinum has three studios, two run by me and Mickey, and one run by Hixxy and Sunset Regime. I also make the tea. The list of people he’s worked with hoes on and on, but the DJ’s he enjoys working with most are Demo, Dougal and Breeze because “They are all top class and know what works and what doesn’t”. He has plans to work with others and he has a few little secrets that he reckons will be really huge, but we’ll have to wait ‘till summer to see what happens there (god I hate that, when they tease you with tit bits of info’ that they won’t elaborate on- bastard).

So where does this talented young man see himself in five years time?” “Hopefully I’ll be a well know DJ and Producer. Still making tunes, hopefully tunes that ravers love, maybe living in Los Angeles or California after winning the lottery”. When I asked him about his most embarrassing moment his answer left me dying to know more: “The things I did at Labrynth on my 17th Birthday. I don’t know if they’re true or not but people still wind me up about them.” If anybody knows what the hell he’s talking about please inform me so I can tell me your proudest moment.....”Getting my name on Hardcore Heaven flyer”. Yes, I can see how that would make you proud, but I can also see that that was just the start of bigger things to come for a DJ/Producer with such obvious talent.

I wish you all the lick in the world on your road to success!!!!
