DJ / PA DYE WITNESS / MISJAH INTERVIEW

The name Misjah has been synonymous with quality dance floor productions for over 17 years. He is considered to be one of the first to start Happy Hardcore and Acid Techno/Hardhouse. An innovator, an inspiration and living legend to many.

It all began in 1991 with releases under one of his alias's "Dyewitness". “Observing the earth”, “What would you like to hear”, “The Future” and “The Masterplan” already put his name on the map of dance floor hits forever. They are still considered all time classics.

After these releases, Midtown Records asked Misjah to start his own label for them; X-Trax was born on December 1994. He started producing tracks with the help of some friends: DJ Tim and Jeroen (Groovehead) Artists such as Ferry Corsten, Umek, and Piet Bervoets (Rank1) also had releases on X-Trax Classics from this label include: Trippin' Out, The Club, Special Acid Edition, and of course “Access” which made it to the English charts in 1995.

Due to the huge success of X-Trax he was sought after by such artists like: Josh Wink, Jam and Spoon, Reflect, Format One, Finitribe, Denki Groove, etc to produce remixes for them.

Misjah has also produced under various artist/project names in different styles of dance music. In 1999 he started another project under the name “Ambassador”. It was under this name that he remixed “Blaze - My Beat”. His remix became a huge club hit and was used in the video clip. It even made it to the English charts.

In December 1999 he stopped doing the A&R for X-Trax. In 2001 he started a new label called ReRun and ReRun Booking's DJ Agency. The agency is responsible for booking some major players in the techno scene such as Hardcell, Trevor Rockcliffe, etc.

He has released on numerous labels including: Craft Music, Wetmusik, Pocket, Zync, Mankind, Jericho etc. Just to name a few. His records can be found in the record bags of such djs as: Adam Beyer, Sven Vath, Carl Cox etc.

Since his dj career took off in 1994, he has been traveling around the globe continuously to all continents. Playing at famous clubs and festivals including: Dance Valley, Roskilde, Mayday and Nature One, etc

As a DJ, Misjah has his own funky style. His sets contain bits and pieces of almost all styles of dance music from techno to house and from minimal to electro and everything in between. He uses his records as tools, in order to create different sounds and tracks and is known for his flawless mixing on 3 turntables, and 2 cd players.

How did you first get into the scene?
I was always playing around with my dad’s tape deck ever since I was a kid. When I got a bit older I bought a drum machine, sampler etc. that’s how I slowly started to make tracks. when my music was released they got popular and so clubs started to ask me for live gigs.

What was the first record you ever bought?
Roger glover - love is all (I was about 5 yrs old hahahah)

How would you describe your music?
Honest dance music.

What other artists do you rate?
To keep my own creations fresh, I don’t listen much to other people really.

How do the Scottish people compare to people in other countries you have played?
Scottish people still remain one of the best crowds there are. Always kind, cheering, enthusiastic and hella crazy!!

What else can we expect from DYEWITNESS/MISJAH in the future?
I stopped making Dyewitness trax a long time ago and I don’t see myself making another ep under that name. as for Misjah im starting to slow down a bit (in tempo). More groovy orientated.

How healthy would you say the scene is in the UK/Europe..?
Not as healthy as it was obviously but I think slowly the scene is getting back “normal”.

What's the maddest thing you have ever done after a gig?
Not sure if it was mad but was def fun: Skinny dippin with 2 blondies after a gig in Norway in an ice cold lake.

What's your studio setup?
G5, logic, ableton, reactor etc, Genelec 1038 main monitors, HR824 nearfields, pc to run some (unstable) plugins. Soundcraft Studio 32 mixer. I use lots of software nowadays but still have all my hardware. The only hardware connected is my 909 though

Do you have a particular favourite party you've played at be it in uk/europe?
Still love the old rezerection parties. Those times/parties were the best. That’s why im looking forward doing fantasyland. If any party can come close to those memories its this party.

Any you would rather forget?
Plenty

Where will Misjah/Dye Witness be in 10 years time?
Retired! With wife and kids on deserted island

In four words describe yourself
Perfectionist, funny, street smart, naughty

Last question - What can we expect from dye witness at fantasylands ? Do you have any surprises planned ?
If I would tell it wouldn’t be a surprise now would it?....just come and see….it will be massive for sure!

We would like to thank Misjah for taking time out of his busy day to do this interview for Fantazia
