DJ Ellis Dee - Exclusive Fantazia interview

Its been along time coming, but Ellis Dee has found time in his busy calendar to have a chat with me. Below is a 'small look into the big world' of Ellis Dee

More Info

CDs & DVD

How did it all begin for you?
I had always been into music and got my first set of decks when I was about 14, I used to play at friends parties, when the acid scene started (1987) me and a couple of friends started a warehouse party in south London and called the rave at the cave, it was a massive success and other promoters started to book me to play at their parties.

So how did the name Ellis Dee come about?
When I first started playing music professionally I used to play acid music so the name Ellis Dee was appropriate.

If the DJing hadn't taken off what would you have done?
Just before I started djing I had my own business delivering parcels so probably built on that.

You always seemed to be at the forefront of the scene.  What made you decide to take the jungle/D&B Route?
I was getting fed up with tracks that had speeded up vocals and piano riffs that sounded too fast, the music was starting to lose credibility for me so I decided to go down the jungle/ d& b route.

You are now in demand for your breakbeat sets.  Is this a sound we are gonna start hearing a lot more on the dancefloors?
Breakbeat has been around for ages now, there is such a wide variety of sounds within the genre so most people will be able to relate to the sound. There’s never any trouble at breaks parties as most people just want to come out and have a good time, so yes, I think we will be hearing a lot more breaks in the future.

What do you think of the sound nowadays and where is it going to from here?
I think it’s a shame that we have so different styles within each genre of music, I remember when you could fit in different tracks into your set as long as you programmed it properly. Breaks is probably easier to work in different styles of tracks and that is one of the reasons why I enjoy playing breaks.

Fantazia are back for their 2nd gig at Braehead in September.  Are you looking forward to playing for them again and what things you got up your sleeve?
I am looking forward to playing for Fantazia, especially seeing that its in Scotland as that was where I was born. I have lots of remixes of old skool tracks that have updated the sound a bit as well as making them more tuffer.

You are standing behind the decks with your shades on, as the sun came up at Fantazia Summertime, is somthing that will stay with me forever.  How was it for you?
Summertime is probably my most memorable set, the picture that you have probably seen on the net was taken by dj Food Junky and I actually didn’t get that photo till about 8 years after it was taken. I think the picture says it all.

Are there any plans for Rhythm Section to do more gigs soon?  You rocked Raindance last year!
The Raindance PA was a good one. We have put together a new set and are considering taking future bookings so get in touch!

Who's throwing the best parties at present?
WE’LL SEE AFTER THE 30TH!!!!

What is the funniest/Strangest thing you have witnessed at a rave?
Robbie Dee hanging from his balls at summertime!

Best/Worst place you have played?
Russia!

Then or now?
Then

Escort or Capri? (Being an Essex boy and all that).
I would have to say Capri as I owned a few back in the 80s. Strictly 3 litres though.

Shouts?
Work hard and don’t give up!  Looking forward to rocking all my fellow countrymen.

Peace
