DJ Of
The
Month –
Technotrance
Scotland’s
Superb
Stomper!
Pas are
queuing
up for
the
manic
‘n’
minimalist
Technotrance
remix.
Claire
Wyburn
meets
Scotland’s
fastest
rising
hardcore
DJ and
they
talk
about
his
first
album
Hard &
Happy,
out this
month on
Jumpin’
& Pumpin’.
The sun
was
slowly
setting,
casting
a deep
red glow
over bar
Kanya,
where
the
Fubar
Ibiza
crew
drank
beers
and
tapped
their
feet to
some
house
grooves…then
Scotland’s
superb
stomper
charged
towards
the
decks
and a
crescendo
of beefy
basslines
and
nutter
noise
blasted
outwards…
ravers
scraped
their
chairs
back and
darted
up,
bouncin’
to the
beat.
It
lasted
about
ten
minutes.
“Who’s
that mad
looking
guy on
with the
chess
board
hair
cut?”
Enquired
Kanya’s
manager
grimly.
“Get I’m
off, I’m
not
having
‘im on
‘ere, is
music’s
mental!”
Exit
Scotland’s
bounciest
‘n’
hardest
DJ,
still
smilin’
‘co he
never
lets
things
get him
down and
anyway,
he
managed
to give
the
hardcore
worshippers
what
they
wanted
another
day.
Until
then Big
Techno
and
Jonesy –
his well
partied-up
partner
also
known as
MC XXX –
had some
serious
holiday-making
to do.
Armed
with a
bottle
of
Baileys
(that’s
for
Technotrance)
and some
Spanish
vodka
(for
Jonesy),
they
departed
towards
the
beach,
the
clubs,
the pubs
and that
little
planet
somewhere
in-between.
Meanwhile
back in
Britain,
Jumpin’
& Pumpin’
were
ready
and
waiting
for the
Scottish
selection
of
stompers
from
Scotland’
best
hardcore
DJ. They
weren’t
disappointed.
Just
like
Alex
Mullin’s
hair,
his
first
album
Hard &
Happy
features
a wide
range of
music
from
hard
trance,
to
classic
Scottish
hardcore
and
thrashin’
wild
Lenny
Dee
numbers.
It’s
also got
a couple
of
exclusives
on there
for the
real
hardcore
heads,
like
Kiss My
Ass
Seduction,
by
Techno
and that
Newcastle
nutter
Mr Party
Boss
Bassy G.
“Kiss my
ass
Seduction?”
I probed
the mad
man
(minus
the
chessboard
hairdo
this
time he
was
actually
quite
normal,
having
also got
rid of
his
Dalmation
hair cut
‘cos, he
informed
me in no
uncertain
terms,
‘it
looked
totally
stupid!’),
“Isn’t
the
title of
yer
latest
track a
bit,
well
RUDE?’
“It’s
all in
good
fun,
like!”
Alex
chortled.
“Seduction
released
Disco
Hardcore,
his rip
off of
Scott
Brown’s
Hardcore
Disco
because
Scott
took a
bit out
of one
of his
tunes
years
ago, so
this is
Seduction’s
revenge.
Anyway,
the
second
riff
from his
tune was
taken
from one
of Bass
Generator
Record’s
tunes,
so we
thought
we’d
have a
wee bit
of fun
and take
one of
his
riffs
and the
title’s
just a
noise
up”.
Cautiously,
I asked
Alex if
Seduction
new
about
the
tune.
“Oh
aye”,
Big
Techno
replied
heartily,
“we took
a dub
plate to
Ibiza”.
And he
saw the
funny
side?
“Definitely!”
Phew.
Kiss My
Ass
Seduction
is
actually
the
B-side
to
Where’s
My Money
Mother
F**ka?,
another
beauty
from the
maddest
DJ
partnership
in the
galaxy.
It’s
dedicated
to a few
folk out
there
too, and
hey! you
know who
ya’s
are. “We
took the
line
from
CB4, a
film
that
takes
the piss
out of
rap.
It’s
like one
of those
0898
numbers
cept’
we’re
just
taking
the piss
out of ‘em”.
And how
would
you know
then, I
queried
Alex,
been
phoning
‘em? “Na
na na,
not at
all”, he
replied
hastily.
As well
as
Techno’s
own
tunes
Natural
Born
Killers,
co-written
with GT
Sampler,
and F**k
The DEA
(that
stands
for the
US Drug
Enforcement
Agency),
an old
hardcore
favourite,
Alex has
selected
some
Scott
Brown
numbers,
Q-Tex vs
Technosis’
Hardcore
Science,
Active
Force
bouncers,
Chill
FM’s
classic
Strobelight
(Technotrance’s
mix) and
a good
selection
of
Gordon
Tennant
and
Jolly
Roger
releases.
But Alex
reckoned
that no
album of
his
would be
complete
without
including
one from
Industrial
Strength,
Lenny
Dee’s
label,
as Alex
totally
respects
the
smirf-like
lunatic.
“I chose
The
Shaftman
‘cos
it’s
really,
really
mad. The
sample’s
taken
from The
Dating
Game”,
he
chuckled.
“Yeah
well,
there’s
no one
more
hardcore
in every
way than
Lenny
Dee”, I
mused,
“apart
from you
and
Guy”, I
quickly
added as
memories
of those
wild
summer
nights
at
Scotland’s
best
illegal
beach
parties
down the
east
coast
came
flooding
back to
me.
Particularly
the one
where
Guy
stood
with
torch in
hand
searching
for
something
he’d
dropped
into the
pitch
black
night.
Around
twenty
of us
were
looking
for it
as well,
until we
realised
we
didn’t
even
known
what the
hell it
was that
Guy had
lost.
“I dunno”,
Alex
said
with a
frown
that
grew
into a
big
raving
grin, “I
reckon
you must
be the
most
hardcore
female
in
Scotland”,
and
ranting
into the
tape he
added:
“I
challenge
anyone
out
there to
be more
hardcore
than
Claire!”
I was
well
chuffed.
Still, I
thought
I’d
better
check to
see what
he meant
by
hardcore.
“Just
being
mad as
f**k and
not
giving a
shit
about
anybody,
whatever
they
say, and
you’re
that,
and
that’s
quoted
by me
and
Guy”. He
told me.
Well,
that
definitely
sounds
like
Alex,
Guy,
Jonsesy
and a
whole
load of
party
animals
I’ve met
out
there
(and I
ain’t
mentioning
any
names
Alex
Bielinski,
Faye
MacDonald,
Juicy,
Frankie,
Christina…
perhaps
the
girls
would
like to
take up
that
challenge?)
Jumpin’
& Pumpin’
also
released
the
hugely
successful
European
Techno
Heaven
in
association
with M8
not long
ago, and
they
were
well up
for
taking
on Hard
& Happy
with
M8’s
favourite
new DJ.
It’s not
hard to
believe
that the
idea was
born of
yet
another
boozy M8
weekender
away in
Ireland.
“Billy
(M8’s
Music
Editor)
had a DJ
mix tape
on in
his car
and I
said “I
wouldn’t
mind
doing
that!”
and
Billy
said ‘no
bother,
big man’
and the
next
time I
heard
from
him, he
told me
he’d
phoned
Jumpin’
& Pumpin’
in
London
and got
the
whole
thing
going
for me”,
Alex
recalled,
still
delighted
with the
memory.
Without
a doubt,
Technotrance
is an
expert
when it
comes to
understanding
what
hardened
party
animals
wanna
hear on
a dance
floor,
which is
why PAs
queuing
up to
get him
to remix
their
tunes.
But it
was his
first
partnership
with
Scotland’s
controversial
Chill FM
that
brought
his
manic
‘n’
minimalist
style to
a wider
audience.
Technotrance’s
remixes
of Fred
West is
Dead,
Strobelight
and
Shocker,
out on
Massive
Respect
Records,
introduce
beefy
hardcore
riffs
and
simple
stomp of
the
deeper
trance
supplied
by Chill
FM. This
partnership
has
taken
Scottish
hardcore
into a
different,
juicier
and more
hypnotic
sound.
As well
as DJing
across
Scotland,
Technotrance
has
travelled
to clubs
like
Kinetic
and
Midlands
UK and
introduced
the
English
to his
hard ‘n’
happy
selection.
With
releases
like
House
Aggression
with
Scott
Brown,
Acid
Thunder
and
Revenge
of The
Cosmic
Ice
Cream
Men with
Gordon
Tennant,
and his
latest
offering
out this
Christmas
YRS
Stamp
PII,
Technotrance
is hot
on the
heels of
Bass
Generator
when it
comes to
being
top of
the
crop.
“The new
YRS
Stamp
mix is
175bpm
rather
than 165
and it’s
got some
excellent
samples,”
Alex
hinted,
“everybody
will
know
them
because
they’re
really
singy
vocal
samples
from an
old
breakbeat
record”.
Watch
out also
for a
long
awaited
appearance
of Alex
and
Bassy
G’s PA
“Chanel,
Guy’s
girlfriend
is gonna
be one
of the
dancers,
and
she’s
into
wearing
a rubber
cat suit
and
carrying
whips.
We’ve
got a
couple
of
inflatable
dolls as
well”.
Ain’t it
amazin’
what a
pint of
Baileys,
Tia
Maria
and
Barcadi
can do
for a
Stirlingshire
boy!
