DJ Food Junky Profile

Food Junky's days gracing the Technics turntables take him back as far as 1985, where he was predominantly into Rare Groove, Soul and Hip Hop.   Whilst at a friends party, the decks were beckoning him from the other side of the room, and Junky, being the extrovert character that he is, showcased his talents for one of the very first times.  The outcome of this party-piece clearly showed that Food Junky had more ability than his counterparts.  Soon after, this well loved Old Skool names formed a sound system with some of his friends and together they would play at small function and similar parties to where he first touched those infamous 1210's/

Despite an obvious talent on the turntables, Food Junk is well known for his build and stature, therefore being the exercise and fitness fanatic that he is, he turned his attentions to the physical, rather than aural technologies of the time;  break dancing.  With his sound system colleagues he formed a Break dancing group, known to all and sundry as 'Beatsworkin'.

This time in Food Junky's life was merely a period of testing water, from dancing to playing out and onto setting up parties;  the early eighties, when most of you reading this would have been more worried about when Tizwaz hit the TV screens, was the time for experimentation.  The next five years or so saw Food Junky mixing and blending with the sound s of Hip-Hop and soul until two of his girlfriends,  that's right two, invited him to an Acid House night at the Astoria in Charing Cross Road - the original  Temple of Dance.

Being into other sounds, Junky was not too keen on such a mission into the unknown but, undeterred, he was shocked to see the massive queue spiralling right around the corner into Soho Square.  Once inside he was totally enthralled by the weird and wonderful sounds which were pathing, unbeknown to him, the way forward for dance music.  Every style of dance music you hear today stems from these early sounds;   The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers,  Goldie, Roni Size, and others have all been influenced by the era between 1987 -1989.  The full on party atmosphere and sound of Acid House were enough to convince him of the popularity of this pre-pubescent sound. not yet at full throttle as a style, but needless to say,  Food Junky danced until the morning....

Food Junky quickly realised that he wanted to contribute more to this atmosphere than just being a part of the crowd;  he wanted to control and manipulate the party goers with this ground breaking new form.   Although his love for Soul and Hip Hop had remained, he developed with the Acid House scene, both as a DJ and a person.  Less than fourteen days later, a demo tapes was recorded and laborious and difficult process of breaking through into a thriving, but still infantile scene began.

His first targets were the promoters of Temple of Dance.... his efforts were rewarded and Food Junky found himself live and direct in the Astoria, London.  His first experience were mixed;  some parties would see him in front of twenty people, some fifteen hundred, but the learning curve was already on the increase... the more he played out, the more popular he became and when, by a stroke of luck, he met Timi Ram Jam from the notorious Rapido set up, Junky took the opportunity laid in front of him, and soon became a Rapido crew member.   he would hand out flyers, help in the organisation of the events, dance, DJ and MC, putting his heart and soul in everything he did.

In 1992, he met someone who was highly influential to his career as a DJ.  When Food Junky met Kenny Ken at the Astoria, their relationship was purely professional to begin with.   Their personalities were such they the two hit it off almost immediately resulting Junky moving into a house with Kenny Ken and his girl friend.  Junky acknowledges the effect Kenny Ken had on his entire DJing career.   When he wasn't playing out on a weekend, he would accompany Kenny and often MC alongside him.   Likewise when Kenny was not playing out, he would tag along with Junky...  for a time the two were inseparable.

Since those early days , Food Junky has played for nearly every promoter within the M25 and many beyond.   His biggest gig to date was performing at the giant Fantazia event New Year 92 / 93 at Littlecote.
