MC Orion Interview

So MC Orion how did it all begin?
I first picked up the microphone at the age of 18 whilst working at the local bingo hall where he grew up, calling out the numbers for the games for all the local inhabitants that frequented the hall, at the time he was listening into and had already started to go to large scale events such as "dreamscape" , "Helter Skelter" , "Kinetic" and "Quest".

Where did the name come from?
The name came from the the type of car I was driving at the time, it was an old 1986 ford Orion, and the lads I used to hang around with started to call me "Orion"

What gave you that initial push?
First of all I wanted to become a DJ to put back something into the scene i loved , but after a few years of practising that went out of the window and at a mates party i again picked up the mic that was just sitting there on the side and started to spit rhymes.

Who’s throwing the best parties at the moment?
At the moment Uproar and HTID are throwing the biggest parties, but i prefer the smaller events as they have their own unique atmosphere about them, events such as "Spunky", "Totally Ardcore", "Hardcore Raver", "Cruze-In", "Full Throttle" and others such as these.

What was the first event you ever played at?
The first event i ever played at was my local event and an event that so far has been running hardcore nights weekly for 10 years in Hereford, called "Spunky". But My first "break" was at event in Swindon called "the fruit club" run by MC Rude.

What's is your real name if you use an alias and how old are you?
My real name is Derek, but everyone I know calls me Del, and I'm the ripe old age of 30 for the time being until NYE then ill be 31

Where do you live?
I live in Worcester, but was dragged up in a little place called Leominster near the welsh borders.

What can you remember of being at a Fantazia?
I was taken to Fantazia - One step beyond at the ripe old age of 14, still don't know how i managed to get in but I did.

Other DJs you rate?
DJ's i rate over the years have changed and will probably always change due to the ongoing evolution of the scene that where part of, but the DJ's i feel that are consistent and have been over the years are: Dougal , Sy, Brisk, Seduction, Hixxy and Druid.

What are your feelings on the MC's?
Being an MC can bring a mixed reaction as some people love them and others dislike them, I feel that so long as the MC is there to enhance the set then they are doing their job that they are booked for.

What do you do outside of the dance music scene?
Outside of the scene i work as a senior support worker for people with challenging behaviour and learning disabilities.

What advice would you give to up and coming MCs?
To keep at it, keep doing what they do, watch and listen to other MC's but more importantly - make sure you have your own style! Get the demos out to all the promoters, take demos with you to events you go to, hand them out to promoters and ravers alike. If you have a local event, go there and speak to the promoter, give them a demo and keep pushing.

Any shouts?
I want to thank all the promoters who have booked me over the years, and some shouts to:
Mayhem (& all the spunky crew & ravers), Jeopardy, Frooty, Barn-E (&Jess), Unity, Gazy-J, Scotti-B, Kerion (Kp), Tones, Topspin, Tommi -T, Matt, Denver(MC Pace), Phil(Friction), Scott(Smiley), Barno, Wotsee, Breeze, Cruze, Hixxy, Whizzkid, Storm, Ribbz, Si the Sigh, Robbie-D, Rude, Seduction, Vibes & Livelee, Kevin Energy, Sharkey, Brisk, Scott Brown, Sc@r & Uplift, Naughty (& all the Full Throttle ravers), Ben(& all the boys/Girls at Bazooka), Centry MC, Miss Special K (& all the Totally Ardcore regulars), Eroll,  Carris and Steve at Kinetic & All the kinetic crew.
