Jungle Fever - The Edge 11th Dec 1993 I could have been in a party at an event anywhere in England, so complete was the transformation and production for Jungle Fever, but I knew that I was in the Edge Coventry although it was unreal. |

From the amount of effort and time that had obviously been put in by the production crew, I could see that whoever came tonight was going to be in for a spectacular show.
I firstly visited the cinema, where footage from early rave days were being shown, there was a Global Explosion stall selling merchandise, and even an art exhibition by Pez showing some of his works (he paints the pictures we dream about) and may I say that his work is brilliant, fantasy or not.
The second floor had all The Edge’s existing sound system (25k) installed along with UV art, backdrops and screens placed around the walls. A few dance platforms were placed in the centre, which had changed the room substantially. Even the stairs had backdrops hung to them to change their appearance which worked quite well, they were effective in adding a ‘Jungle’ setting.
However, in the main arena the hard work that had been done in turning The Edge into a jungle setting was complete. The stage had been turned into a 20ft high tree hut setting, complete with spears, shields and even an immense 8ft gorilla placed in the centre of the stage.
Enough camouflage netting was used to hide a regiment of tanks, but this added to the overall effect of turning the room into a forest or jungle clearing. Four large tree trunks about 15ft high were placed either side of the steps at the side of the room which lead up to the raised dance area’s one side was used for VIP’s the other side a free for all.
Even the DJ box had been revamped to give the effect that the jocks were playing from a tree house. There are far too many things that I could write about, let it suffice, that everything and more was present that had been on the flyer.
The main sound system that had been installed was placed around the room, in front of the stage, at the back of the room, and even on the balcony upstairs. Stuart from C.A.V. had done a blinding job with the sound system, a Martin F2 – 32k, but with the other systems that were used the total sound used was increased to over 50k!! Which believe me did a very good job of moving the wax from your ears!
The place filled up very fast, with people who had travelled from London and Home Counties, along with Midlanders and Northerners, all coming together to be in the Jungle, enjoy the music, each others company and the vibe.
The music that was played all night was hard jungle, booyaka style and the crowd (over 1,500) loved it and went wild time after time. The jocks played to the crowd all night keeping them in a frenzy, and all of the DJ’s billed appeared except Grooverider who was in Scotland – double booked.
Live PA by the Ragga Twins was to say the least live and very energetic, the crowd went into what seemed like another mad frenzy. I have never seen excitement like it at the Edge I couldn’t keep my hat on!! During DJ Hypes set the crowd jumped so much the needle came off the track. When re-started the same thing happened again.
The second room was packed all night, and all jocks and MC’s billed turned up and pleased their audience. Jungle Fever have got all the ingredients right, setting, sound, lights, vibe, all in all a most awesome production was put on at this event and has set a standard at The Edge lets hope the trend continues to regain the respect that it once commanded. The venue is brilliant and with thought and imagination can be turned into virtually any setting you want. Jungle Fever proved it and had everyone in a fever. |
