The Edge/Eclipse - Coventry Club

We gazed beyond the large, steel doors into unfamiliar surroundings there were to entertain us with hardcore hysteria over the next 12 hours.

As we passed through the airport- style detector, we realised that we would be two out of over a thousand dedicated ravers, who would be privileged to share in celebrating the first birthday of one of the country’s most established venues, “The Edge” in Coventry.

Formally known as, “The Eclipse”, “the Edge” has enjoyed and increased following as a result of renovations undertaken exactly one year ago. This celebratory night was held in recognition of the success given to it by it’s present image. After chatting to the management, we set off to familiarise ourselves with the layout. Up two flights of stairs and the pounding of the walls around us told us we were at Arena one.

Inside revealed a room not only filled by people with white gloves, glow-sticks, and jugglers but an excellent sound system perfectly matched to the intense lighting and four colour laser display. It was hard to keep hold on reality as the beat of Tango’s first set vibrated through out bodies. The jungle of cloth drapes and overhead netting around us offered us a fantasy world, filled with moonflowers, flower strobes and golden scans, into which we could escape.

As top tune, after top tune, changed to set after set, we needed a recharge and therefore made our way to the ground floor, where we could relax in the purposely provided shill out area. This excellent “walk in cinema” had everything contained in the same room in order for a raver to chill: toilets and a bar ( these provided on every floor), also soft sofas and comfy cushions, in order for one to watch MTV, provided on a large screen. The temptation to remain in this ambience was understandable, but the promise of eleven of the finest DJ’s, and two excellent PA’s had us setting off for the second floor once again.

Our attention was distracted whilst on the first floor as “I’ll set you freeeee!” echoed around the staircase. A low-lit room playing House tunes from’89 invited us to enter. This second arena known as the “juice bar” was buzzing whit even more activity! Bodies were grooving to a collection of classic tines, played by resident Ricky Stone. We were approached by a group of inquisitive clubbers, eager to introduce themselves and make us feel welcome.

Now at one o’clock, with seven more undisappointing hours to go, it was time to go up to the forth floor, yet another room, the balcony . From here the whole spirit of the “dance floor” can be seen. But people here are not standing still! They too are rocking, anticipating the first of tonight’s two PA’s

Onto the stage come the dancers and everyone is peaking as “The Bang in Tunes” crew, start their set. The frenzy is constant as the club carries on throughout the early hours of the morning.

As time carries on, things are still continuing pretty much as they had been before. The dance floor and balcony are still rocking. The pace subtly metamorphosised to trance in the juice bar. The only noticeable difference is that the chill out room has increased in occupancy. As those same steel doors are opened onto Sunday morning Coventry, it looks like we’ll have to face the inevitable, every ravers nightmare, its time to go home.

Although this did not seem like a first birthday celebration, it was still an excellent night. Many preconceived ideas and past rumours about inefficiency, security here do an excellent job. Thanks to the management for their support and a well organised night. Also thanks to everyone we met who made out night what it was – “take it easy”

Take a chance-journey to the Edge!
